Rap battle turned slicey at Maverick T stop Monday afternoon
Transit Police report arresting two alleged combatants they say pulled out sharp implements during an escalating argument over loud music at the Maverick Square T stop on Monday afternoon.
Upon arrival officers ascertained the following: a male later identified as Joseph Carrigan, 44, of Revere [left in photo] instructed another male, later identified as Tristen Phillips, 31, of Malden to turn his radio down due to the offensive language of the lyrics. An argument ensued and ultimately both parties engaged in a physical confrontation where they assaulted one another with a knife (Phillips) and a pair of scissors (Carrigan).
Both suffered non-life-threatening injuries, both ran from the station, both were charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon once police found them.
Innocent, etc.

They seem nice.

Violence is never the answer...
But Mr. Carrigan is all of us...
speak for yourself
(or rap, if you prefer)
rap
I'm hip, I'm cool, I'm on a train,
I'm nobody's fool, I'm not insane.
I got the scissors, don't like the noise,
I'm cutting the 'locks off you and your boyz.
You mess with me I'll give you the flu,
With guys like me you don't wanna screw.
So mess with me I'll give you the knife,
Cause you know I ain't no Barney Fife.
Oh,really
You walk around with scissors also?
And knitting needles...
And yarn, of course
I wonder what
happened to his trowels? Mr. Carrigan I mean.
Mr. Carrigan is proof that
Mr. Carrigan is proof that good people fall victim to this opioid crisis. As sick as he looks his morals are intact.
Fuck, that's a shitton of
Fuck, that's a shitton of assumptions you just laid out there.
Right... black guy gets
Right... black guy gets harassed while minding his own damn business in a free country and we feel bad for the aggressor.
This is everything that’s wrong with this shity. I mean city.
Not minding his own business
He was playing a radio loudly in a subway station. Just like the idiots that one often sees on the Orange Line, except those people play their bluetooth speakers in a train car. "Minding his own business" requires headphones, or at least a low enough volume that people outside a certain distance can't hear it.
Also, he had a knife on him. No idea why the other guy had scissors, but it's clear that neither was up to much good.
It might be mainstream liberal ideology, but not everything falls into the narrative of "black people being victimized".
just another...
nigger, dragging everyone around him into discomfort and misery.
Sounds like you're the one
living in discomfort and misery, homeboy.
When you blast music on the
When you blast music on the subway you are not minding your own business. You are forcing that crap on others.
you weren't there--you don't
you weren't there--you don't know what happened--so your shriveled white brain showed its true colors. let me take a wild guess--when you get your check you won't cash it--you'll frame it and put on your wall! o' Yellowhead I love thee!
Are you insinuating that I’m
Are you insinuating that I’m a Trump supporter? How wrong you are. I hate that moron. So now you are the one who is prejudging. And looking foolish and hypocritical.
Racist much?
White brain? Granted my brain education comes from the same source as he who shall not be named, that is Young Frankenstein. But I thought brains in all human beings were gray and a few other colors, gosh even black!
You know Joe? From Revere?
Can't imagine why he'd turn violent towards a person of color.
"The Carrigans are generally apolitical, but they like Trump because he is a businessman, not a politician.
"When you've got people ... blowing up people at the marathon, and you have people walking up on cops and shooting them, a change needs to be made," Joseph Carrigan said. "Whether Trump makes a change or not, he has the know-how to say it. He'll say what other politicians won't, about the borders and about health care and about the elderly. He just ain't a politician."
Must have been his OneBostonDay act of kindness.
I missed the part where it
I missed the part where it says he turned violent first. Is that true? If so my comment doesn’t stand. I just like that fact the he spoke up when inappropriate music was blasting. Most people don’t. Parents should have the choice of whether or not they want their young children to hear adult topics in music.
Where that quote came from
Here:

As if Revere was Paris in the 1920's prior to Obama's election-- please.
I find it sadly hilarious when anyone says "It's tha gawdamm immigrants that are ruining this town!" Invariably, it's someone from a group that had the same thing said about them once upon a time. Congrats on getting to a point where you can shit on the next wave.
a person of color...
Any one playing offensive music, with no regard for his fellow man is a Nigger, not a person of color. Take it from a blk man himself.
It's not crap.
It's music. You may not like it, but it is. However, NO ONE should be blasting music (of any kind) on the T. That's why god made earbuds. ;-) I don't care if it's Beethoven or Sondheim or Billy Joel - just don't do it.
(That also goes for those who like to rap out loud along with whatever they're listening to - that's equally offensive.)
Spewing that to the wrong
Spewing that to the wrong person.
My only point was he spoke up
My only point was he spoke up when most people won’t. Calm down everyone.
And for the people commenting racism...you have no idea who I am.
You know what else is wrong?
You know what else is wrong? That as a black mom riding the T with my child I have no choice but to subject my 5 year old to sexually explicit music on the regular. I’m just glad somebody spoke up. Don’t take it somewhere that it doesn’t need to go.
Or any mom black or white. It
Or any mom black or white. It’s offensive
Absolutely
I did a semi-funny rap a bit ago. It was a joke. But...
There is NO reason a woman with kids should be exposed to crude vulgarities on the train.
Reality? Complain to your city councilor. Complain to your rep. Complain to the head of the damn MBTA.
Make noise.
Reality is most of us women
Reality is most of us women make plenty of noise and will continue to do so. It’s not always heard. We are told to ignore it...just move away...take another seat.
Not enough details here
I absolutely agree with you if it was sexually explicit music, full of blatant drug content, or anything like that. But we don't know. Just look at all the comments here from people who are assuming that "rap" means it was inappropriate for children to hear. It's very possible that this was in fact positive music he was listening to, and this white Trump supporter was offended by the presence of an art form originating in Black culture, or offended at seeing a Black man experiencing some joy.
You know when I'm on the bus
You know when I'm on the bus or train I don't really care what kind of music it is, it's selfish af to blast it in public. Could be that salsa that reminds me of my childhood, my favorite Jay-Z track, could be a song I loved in college...point is they're ignorant for subjecting everyone to what you want to hear because they have no manners and don't know how to act in public.
Same with the older people with me on the bus who decide to watch whatever video full blast on their phone, no thank you.
He is a victim of the opioid crisis but not the way you think
His sister died of an overdose @BBW.
