Baker: Immigration ban stupid
By adamg on Tue, 04/21/2020 - 1:13pm
In response to a reporter's question, Gov. Baker took a moment out of his daily Covid-19 briefing to say he opposes the Trump administration's attempt to ban all immigration. "It doesn't make any sense and I don't think it makes us any safer."

At least I heard that question
A continuing problem is that those of us who watch or listen to these briefings can not hear the questions from the reporters, making some of Baker's responses difficult or impossible to understand.
It seems that some reporters, perhaps in the front row, perhaps with the loudest voices, can be heard. And so I did hear that question about the immigration ban.
I posted on this subject previously, and have written and called the governor's office several times, and I have contacted some of the stations that broadcast the briefing, but so far, no responses.
I will continue to point to the example of Mayor Walsh, who repeats or restates questions from reporters so we can understand the answers.
I wonder
if you could file an ADA complaint?
Cute but missing the point
No one can hear the questions except the people in the room.
Zak?
Is that you?
Not Zak. I am anon.
But if Zak has a problem with the way Baker conducts his press conferences, I feel his pain.
Whoever he is...
... he ain't wrong. What is the point of broadcasting a press conference if you aren't going to let listeners hear the questions? At this point it goes beyond 'minor technical glitch' or 'didn't know remote listeners couldn't hear' and comes across as pig-headed.
Zak
If I remember correctly, theszak, or whatever his name was, was always looking for transcripts of government proceedings for the hard of hearing.
The ironic thing is that at Baker's press conferences, only those that understand ASL can understand the questions. It seems that the translator is translating the questions. But the rest of us are shut out
What is theszak doing now
that the libraries are all closed?
Hell, _I'm_ going through serious withdrawal and I can only imagine how he must be feeling.
He's probably in one of them....
locked in there until July by him self eating Ho-Hos and cokes from the vending machines, living his best life. You and I might want to go to Hawaii for two weeks, The Zak wants to quarantine himself in the Library for 5 months, live streaming public meetings on one of the large screens in there,
On a more serious note,
Similarly to how we haven't heard from Elmer (for those who are unaware, the guy who would comment "Adorable!" to mainly animal related posts) in recent memory, I hope he's ok. He has a very specific shtick, but there has to be someone to fight for those causes I appreciate that about him, however annoying or exhausting it might come across as.
Yes and yes
I was in the front row and I am very loud.
So Mike, ask the question!
"Governor! Would you be willing to repeat the questions the reporters ask you each day, or employ a boom mike?"
Hey Mike
If you're Mike Deehan of WGBH, and you are attending today's briefing, could you please ask Governor Baker to repeat or restate the questions so we can fully understand his answers? Or alternatively the people who set up these briefings could provide a microphone or microphones for the reporters.
This is an issue that Adam and others have mentioned several times.
Thanks
Anon
Baker clearly hasn't taken
press conference training 101. Repeating questions asked by reporters without mics before answering is really basic stuff.
Thank an immigrant
Maryland got half a million covid tests.
Among a half million other things immigrants do every day for this country.
But yeah - go ahead and stop letting foreigners in. Every immigrant I've ever met from my grandparents on out is so grateful for what this country has provided them. And they give it back in spades.
We can argue about legal/illegal immigration, but immigrants over the centuries are our most valuable commodity. As the grandson of an immigrant that has enjoyed the dream, our dear orange leader should be the first to recognize that.
Melania, etc.
And isn't his own wife an immigrant? His first wife too? His in-laws? Many of his resort employees? He is a case study in hypocrisy.
Thats different
She is privileged.
She's a certified Genius
It's on her visa. Does our President have any paperwork certifying his stable genius-hood?
He must not be looking for a
He must not be looking for a new one yet.
One more idiotic policy from the Impeached president
Immigrants are critically important to our health care system.

Impeached?
Did I miss something other than 2 1/2 of waste?
He's like Bill Clinton
Except he actually committed a crime. Did you not watch the hearings?
Actually, so did Clinton
But I think most would agree in hindsight that Clinton's offense was not impeachable.
Trump's offense? My guess would be that history is less kind in the analysis, but it's perhsps just gray enough to earn him a pass.
They both did the crime. Even their own party members admit that.
I was distracted by impeachment so I took some
hydroxychloroquine. But that was before I had my 4 millionth COVID test after I took off the 95 millionth mask I got from Ghi-na. Once I check my blood sugar, I'm heading to a rally with my gun and Confederate flag where I'll rally for my freedom to infect you. Has anyone seen my shiny object?
Another ineffectual distraction from
a thoroughly incompetent response from the Feds. It turns out the Dear Leader isn't much of a leader in the clutch, after all. He's still spending more time trying to get the stink of his miserable failures off himself than he is helping his constituents. What a deadly blot on American history.
Are you sure
He's a Republican!
Republican governors
Republican governors
Massachusetts has a history of electing really terrible Republicans
How does this stupidity apply?
To researchers, doctors, nurses, farm workers, grocers on the front line who are working with valid green cards and work permits.
It's stupid
because it does nothing to address the problem, and it actually worsens the problem by making undocumented immigrants (or even documented ones) afraid of testing or seeking care. It is Dear Leader's intent to cause a distraction and blame people who can't fight back. It's straight from the autocrat's playbook.
I think they'd be OK
But who knows...this "Governing by Tweet" is something new and it didn't come with a users manual.
It won't
because this whole idea is just a way for Trump to appeal to his base (who will rabidly eat up anything that lets them turn their hatred on a convenient Other) and also rile up his opponents (who will rightly decry this as unnecessary and cruel), which he enjoys.
Then when it doesn't actually go anywhere, his supporters will turn and point to any criticism as having been overblown. Rinse, repeat, etc...
Stupidity in Action
I doubt there will be any impact on those already here. They might suspend those traveling in on work visas from other countries, but those are already approved to be here and might have family based here. Plus who is traveling internationally right now?
The overseas US consulates are mostly closed, so this shouldn't change that. Canadian citizens can get certain US work visas at the border, so that might get suspended.
Unless they shut down all visa processing happening in the US, there isn't really much immigration to stop. And that would be a mess as there are lots of visas and EADs being processed right now.
Seems to be red meat to the base.
Full of sound & fury, signifying nothing.
the president said it
and his administration works to make his words law. it’s not “signifying nothing” regardless of what his primary intent is.
We don't have enough PPE,
We don't have enough PPE, ventilators and hospital beds for the people already here,so we're going to bring in more people.
