Custom House clock tower is timeless

Custom House clock tower

Jessica Kent looked up today and discovered there's no time like the present, or any time at all, really, on any of the sides of the Custom House clock.

Until we find out for sure they're just repainting or sealing the hands or something, we're going to assume it's the world's weirdest caper, because 2020.

UPDATE:

This is not a 2020 caper, alas. Yankee Steeplejack of Harvard took the hands down for repair. And here is the best video you'll see of the work, hands down.

Thanks to Trish P. for linking us to that!

I'm pretty sure the hands were platinum. How hard can they be to replace?

Platinum??? If they were, they would have been stolen a long time ago.

I could ask Dave Hochstrasser to check in, but the ones he put on that clock in the 1990s were early resin composite painted with gold leaf.

Being lighter than brass, they stress the mechanism a lot less ... the problem was that they were an early and large application of resin composites and they kept warping coming out of the mold and the manufacturer was behind on the delivery.

You may have noticed that they had "black arm bands" for a while, as Dave was experimenting with what might be done with new arms to make them more visible from the street.

You can see the new carbon fiber composite ones being made!

if they made the hands go backwards (and no, I'm not suggesting anyone actually do that.)

More proof that this year is going to go on forever.

This is awesome. I never thought I'd see the hands up so close.

PS - logo change made me laugh coffee out my nose.

Curious if they'd contemplate some kind of LED lighting on the hands. The clock looks beautiful at night, but with dark hands it's hard to tell the time...
