John Barros, who ran for mayor in 2013, will try again this year. He's scheduled a 10 a.m. press conference at Restaurante Cesaria, the Dorchester restaurant he has owned for the past 20 years.
Following the 2013 election, winner Marty Walsh made Barros his chief of economic development.
He joins City Councilors Michelle Wu, Andrea Campbell and Annissa Essaibi George, State Rep. Jon Santiago and Dana Depelteau as official candidates for the seat Marty Walsh is going to be resigning from any day now to become labor secretary.

Cabo Verdiano!

I don’t know much about this gentleman, but it’s nice to see a member of the Cape Verdean community inject his voice into a diverse race. Cape Verdeans have been coming here for more than a century and have long provided a reliable segment of the region’s workforce. I hope he does the community proud.

John is an extremely nice person. I worked on the 2013 race for an opponent of his and he was basically the only one of the other 12 candidates that would politely engage with his opponents volunteers. If that is not a sign of character I don’t know what is.
I am undecided and will let the next few months play out before making my decision on who to vote (quite a few great candidates IMO) for but the residents of our fine city are better off with him in the race.
Ah, fanatsy.

If Walsh and dedication to the belief that real estate deals and corporate appeasement are the keys to community improvement are your bag, then Barros is your man.
Nice guy who came from the neighborhoods who's very comfortable in the company of bankers and executives.
this right here^^

Agreed. I voted for him in the preliminary elections in 2013 and was pleased to see him have an important post in the Walsh administration. Ahh those heady and naive days of youth...
Yeah, he turned out to be realtor remora. Walsh 2.0 indeed. No thanks.

He's the one who sent everyone back to the collective farm and destroyed the universities.
He's also the one whose government was anything but a meritocracy, one that expelled all foreigners and closed down to any foreign connections.
Also did a whole lot of concealing and expunging the massive catastrophic results of a lack of disaster response.
Sounds exactly like what the QOP stands for - anti-intellectualism, faux agrarianism, caste systems, xenophobia, covering up incompetence and death tolls after natural disasters, etc.
Not to mention the dumb looking haircut and the ill-fitting suits.
Not a fan, eh?

Personal experience with him? I only know him from the documentary "City Hall", where I thought he seemed to know his shit pretty well. Never met him myself, and really dont know all that much about his stances, record, etc.
Where do you live in the city?

Can't wait until he has to field the question, "What will you do to make housing in Boston more affordable?"
Just once I'd like to see a politician shrug and admit, "There's not much I can do."

If it doesn't do so now it never will, what with white collar people able to work from anywhere and everyone else broker than ever.

Abolish the giveaway requirement, cut down the red tape and reign in the unions so it's possible to build a basic apartment for $300K instead of $600K in places where people are only willing to pay $350K? Developers don't care about location or luxury, they'll build anything that's profitable and makes them money.

Also known as the jobs that let non-white collar folks be able to buy a house in the city vs. working 32 hours without benefits at some hourly wage gig. You think all those trucks with NH plates all over the city at job sites are driven by union workers? GTFO
