Election roundup: Wu, Janey lead latest poll; candidates discuss whether to keep Cassellius as BPS superintentendent

A Globe/Suffolk University poll shows Michelle Wu and Kim Janey opening big leads in the race to get on the November final ballot. The two men in the race both polled in single digits, with one, John Barros, at just 1.8%, so in addition to electing Boston's first mayor of color, voters in November could also elect our first woman mayor.

Five of the six mayoral candidates got Fenway frank in a forum on issues in that neighborhood. Janey was the lone absentee.
State Rep. Dan Hunt of Dorchester has endorsed fellow Dot rat Erin Murphy in her race for one of the four at-large city-council seats.

The strength of the incumbent effect is truly shocking re Janey.

Even acting as the incumbent is so strong, she's skipping out on every debate.
I gotta say
I've seen a different take on this point being made in just about every thread here. If Janey does something unpopular as acting mayor, it's a clear sign that being the incumbent is going to hurt her; if she's doing well in a poll, it's a clear sign that she's benefiting from being the incumbent. Did we ever stop to take into account that maybe people like or dislike her based on her policies and ideas?

What exactly are her policies and ideas? It's a bit hard to tell without her really participating in the debates...
I don't actually know myself
But, she's been elected to the City Council a couple of times, and selected by her fellow councilors to be the President of the Council, so some people clearly approve of the job she's doing.
Really, what we need is a more nuanced look at the race that looks to talk to people about why they're choosing to support a specific candidate. Without that, I just don't think we can say "well people must just be supporting an incumbent who they probably didn't vote for and don't necessarily know anything about".
I wouldn't read too much into
I wouldn't read too much into the council president thing. Term limits + not being able to be president twice means almost everyone gets a stab at it if they're on the council long enough. Plus it's mostly a ceremonial role other than the whole "being promoted to mayor" thing, which it's not clear anyone was really expecting to happen when they did it. It concerns me that more people don't know these things and are using her status as the council president to vote for her for mayor.
Also, Wu and Campbell were also council presidents at various points in the past and it's not like they were voted out or anything.
Keep Cassellius
While there's some logic to letting a new mayor pick a BPS leader, there's too much turmoil at the top of BPS and I think she's been ok. The chief of police should be selected by the next elected mayor though.

You think one person is supposed to magically solve several decades of inept leadership in two years or GTFO? A lot of what she's dealing with is inherited from Menino era stuff. For example, that whole RC 'counseling' thing. I have multiple kids in BPS, thanks.

Suffolk University is a pooling group with a decent national reputation.
