Canines are cool like that. Like the wolf and coyote, it's a form of ancient communication with other fellow howlers, like the urban siren hound.

I've heard dogs howl at fire engines many times--used to live on a street with a large dog and a fire station for neighbors. I think their reasoning is something like "This sounds important, gonna be a good citizen and repeat it in case anyone missed it."
