Turtle at Jamaica Pond

One of the larger turtles in Jamaica Pond took in some sun yesterday at the pond's main turtle haven.

There are eels in there. And muskrats (took some photos of one of them yesterday, but they're not very good).

Trachemys scripta elegans. It's not native to New England, being a turtle of the Mississippi Valley, and this one is probably the descendant of escaped pets.

This species is extremely adaptable; a story on the BBC Web site a few years ago described one that was found swimming under the ice in a river in Sweden in wintertime. It was taken to the local university, where experts couldn't identify it, even though it was easily recognizable from its picture, as this one is.

It is related to the endangered red-bellied turtle (Pseudemys rubriventris) of Plymouth County and the Cape.

I'm pretty sure most of the turtles in the Boston area are descendants of released pets. Think about it. Them colonist were hungry and those turtles were just laying there on the logs... Conservation was not a big thing in those days.
