Arlington schools delay opening on account of bear

Arlington Police report schools have delayed openings this morning because a bear is roaming around town. The bear was last spotted in the area of Paul Revere Road and Park Street. Police have stationed officers near all schools to keep the ursus situation from getting worsus.

A bear was also reported ambling around Newton yesterday

What do the police plan to do if the bear wants to go to school? Arrest it?

And bring it somewhere even more leafy than Arlington (well, I imagine environmental police, who have been requested, would do the tranqing, not APD).

probably shoot first and ask questions later.

If it was a polar bear they'd take it to Burger King.

As most people know already, the skin of a polar bear is pitch black.

Once upon a time there were three Bears, who lived together in a house of their own, in a wood. One of them was a Little Wee Bear, and one was a Middle-sized Bear, and the other was a Great Big Bear. They had each a bowl for their porridge; a little bowl for the Little Wee Bear; and a middle-sized bowl for the Middle-sized Bear; and a great bowl for the Great Big Bear. And they had each a chair to sit in; a little chair for the Little Wee Bear; and a middle-sized chair for the Middle-sized Bear; and a great chair for the Great Big Bear. And they had each a bed to sleep in; a little bed for the Little Wee Bear; and a middle-sized bed for the Middle-sized Bear; and a great bed for the Great Big Bear.

“Sorry, kids who just walked to school, school is temporarily closed because there is a bear walking around and it’s not safe to be out walking around. So until school opens you should (checks notes) umm… hang out in the streets, or walk back home, or something.”

When I was in high school a bunch of us had to travel across several cities to get to school but most of the kids were local. We had an issue where we would have to leave to get to school before they made the announcements to delay school. This was back before they made the announcements two weeks in advance of a storm. So often times we would get to school without realizing it was delayed. After that happened a few times parents complained and the school opened up a home room class for kids that got in early. Previously we just hung out at a local coffee shop which I am sure did not make them happy.

I would hope that the school thought of this issue and if they did not they need to plan for that if this is going to be a more regular occurrence. Not everyone keeps their eyes glued to the district Facebook page every morning.

Since, as far as I can tell, there have not been any reports of tigers out there.

When did bears become such a threat that they lock up schools? Bears have been roaming around New England forever.

If anything around here is a dangerous menace, it's coyotes.
