Mass shooting on Talbot Avenue this morning, but police say it had nothing to do with Carnival
Update: One of the victims was also one of the shooters police say.
Eight people were shot on Talbot Avenue near Blue Hill Avenue around 7:45 a.m. as the Jouvert parade, part of the day's Carnival celebration, was passing by.
WriteHandMan reports: "Sounded like 15 to 18 shots then chaos."
The rest of the day's Carnival's events will go on as planned, officials said.
At an early afternoon press conference on Martin Luther King Boulevard, Police Commissioner Michael Cox said the shootings apparently stemmed from a beef between two groups who had nothing to do with Carnival.
He said all of the victims were taking to local hospitals with injuries not considered life threatening. Two people were arrested. He said officers, already stationed along the Jouvert route, rushed towards the gunfire and applied tourniquets to the victims who needed them.
Police later found an eighth victim.
Cox declined to get specific about what led to the shootings, because they remain under investigation.
Mayor Wu, who also spoke at the press conference, called it "heartwrenching" that Carnival would be tagged with this morning's violence. "There's absolutely no excuse for something open to the community and part of Boston's culture and heritage to be talked about this way," she said. "We're going to have a great rest of the day."
She said Boston's Carnival, in its 50th year this year, is one of the largest in the world and a key part of Boston culture.
Like Wu, Shirley Shillingford, a Carnival organizer, said the violence had nothing to do with Carnival. "Kudos to my Boston police, especially to B-3," she said.

Can someone explain Jouvert to me?
I'm unfamiliar with the whole context. Why is this particular parade / festival so consistently marked by violence?
Caribbean carneval
J'ouvert is the opening of the carneval, in the morning. then there is a large parade.
It's run by a collective of Caribbean associations in Boston of people from Trinidad, Montserrat, Jamaica, the Lesser Antilles etc. It's traditional, and has been the biggest event in Boston in terms of spectators in some years.
The occasional violence is from the usual idiots showing up to spoil a good time. Stupid score-settling.
You can go, you will have a good time. Nobody hassles white people there, community point of pride.
A bullet doesn't care whether you are white
and this sounds like a lot of bullets. I'm glad that I did not get up early to go this year.
Who said anything about "white"?
?
deselby did:
"You can go, you will have a good time. Nobody hassles white people there, community point of pride."
Occasional?
It’s every year.
They allow people to drink openly because the City is scared someone will call them racist for enforcing open container laws like they do at every other parade. Not $500 ticket here.
But yes, it’s a few idiots, the parade itself isn’t violent. But the violence is consistent, not occasional like you alluded.
Also, only the shootings are typically reported. Alway a dozen or so fights.
ever been to St. Patrick's Day, Pride, or Dorchester Day parade?
or if you want to get haughty, the Esplanade on July 4 or otherwise
or the occasional Super Bowl / World Series / Stanley Cup / NBA Championship parade
lots of thermoses, coolers, and opaque plastic cups.
You have to be very blatant to get a violation.
and that's the way it should be.
It's not even against the law in a lot of other states and countries.
But no shootings.
But no shootings.
have some cheese
with your white whine
Well, at least one shooting
in 2004 after the ALCS.
(but the real point is that there's a ton of violence, unruly behavior, vandalism, etc at all these events which for some reason seems to get ignored in these comparisons.)
Guns are the difference
Except for the one police shooting you linked to here, I don't recall there being any shootings at the other parades and celebrations. Maybe some brawling and fist-fighting, if that.
st patrick’s parade, pride, dot parade
you forgot the marathon. yup lots of people drink at those events. cops usually don’t bother unless trouble begins. i can’t recall 7 people being shot at any of these events.
the mayor and commissioner better hope things stay calm today. deciding to continue an event that featured a mass shooting is CRAZY.
does occasional violence mean every year?
7 people shot at a parade before 8am?
it is nice to hear that nobody hassles the white people though.
Is the rest of Carnival still happening this afternoon?
I don't even know who would make a decision about this.
i’m guessing the mayor?
if anyone can cancel i’m assuming it would be mayor wu. i’m sure she’s consulting with her team.
1145a press conference with mayor and police commissioner
Hasn't started yet
Ed Flynn has already called for the main parade to be canceled
Parade still on
"two groups of people shooting at each other"
Original post updated
With comments from police commissioner and mayor.
Props to Mayor Wu and Commissioner Cox
for letting the parade go on. It's a big production with out-of-state groups etc and it's the neighborhood festival in Mattapan / Rox
Can't let the thugs win.
I don’t understand what the
I don’t understand what the mayor means about the parade being “talked about” in some way. It’s upsetting that the parade is being talked about in some negative fashion? By whom?
Have you read the rest of this thread?
Lots of comments talking about how this parade is apparently the source of violence.
In this case, given that it doesn't seem like the parade had anything to do with the shooting, it is unfortunate that people are talking about it negatively due to something it had nothing to do with.

Boston was recently ranked as the second safest major city, so this incident took me somewhat by surprise.

So... it just so happens that people get stabbed and shot every single year at this? It's totally unrelated? Huh???
Wonder what the over/under line was this year?
Shootings at this festival are so common you can now place bets at Encore.
I'd alway bet the over.
