Trump supporter who bet big on defeating Michelle Wu now dabbling in City Council races

The Dorchester Reporter reports that New Balance CEO and 2016 Trump backer Jim Davis, who pumped $1 million into a PAC that failed to keep Michelle Wu from getting elected mayor this week donated $150,000 to a super PAC that is trying to un-elect two of the City Council's progressive members: Kendra Lara in District 6 and Ricardo Arroyo in District 5. The group's ads in the Herald also support John FitzGerald, Frank Baker's choice, in District 3.

Without a doubt this plan will backfire and end up getting more people to support the people he opposes, not less.

I just bought a new pair of NB sneakers. I forgot about this tool.

I wish I could find a brand that does half sizes and extra wide. (so few do!)

I hear you. I wear 11.5 EEE and they're hard to find in stores. I do ok shopping online finding that size.

very similar to NB in terms of size.

Don’t punish the hard workers at NB in Methuen and Lawrence for this asshat. He’s a jerk but they are on of the last shoe companies that make shoes in the US.

4 in China, 1 in Vietnam, and 1 here the in the US.

Check your tags because all New Balance are not created equal.

13.5 extra wide - Sketchers always has options for me.

If you order directly from them, you can get extra wide

but I can get wide NB for $30 at Joe's nb outlet.

I have been using Hoka One for 2 years and it still looks good.

I once bought a pair of New Balance sneakers, figured I'd support a local company. (Also I knew nothing about the CEO or his politics etc.) They fell apart faster than any other sneakers I've ever owned. Never again.

Ethics seems to be a foreign concept to her. I don't even live in Boston and know all about her, uh, adventures.

No, everybody doesn't want to get rid of her. People who have been opposed to her from the start have made a lot of hay from a bad situation. My views are in line with this piece from the Globe (and I live in her district):
https://www.bostonglobe.com/2023/08/17/opinion/kendra-lara-car-accident-...

Guess we'll see September 12 how much of the district agrees with you!

I hear you about people attacking Lara ever since she got into office because of unfair bias against her. That is not OK, but neither is her conduct. I read the Globe opinion piece you linked, but it did not convince me she had valid reasons for reckless behavior and breaking the law. I don’t expect everyone in office to be perfect angels in all areas of life, however, I can’t put ethics aside in favor of policies I agree with. That is a slippery slope. She won’t be getting my vote.

The arguments in favor of Lara are basically that the ends justify the means. If she supports good policies they like in City Hall, we should overlook any transgressions.

That's the same argument that Trump supporters use. They liked his policies so who cares if he broke a few laws? They claim he, like Lara, had reasonable justifications and infractions were minor at most.

One could argue that driving recklessly without a license and all the shit Trump did are an order of magnitude different. But that's the problem: Who gets to decide what constitutes an "important" law and one that can be broken?

You can like Lara's policies without justifying her actions or giving her a pass.

I totally agree with you.
What happened that she could not have gotten a license in 14 years? Sounds serious to me.
Does she think she is above the law? Apparently so!

I think we've become a bit numb to some politicians misdeeds. A certain former prez has elevated that numbness substantially.

The article goes to great lengths explaining the fiasco with her license. Not one sentence about the unregistered car. Was it even insured?

From what I've read, she doesn't own a car and was borrowing it from a friend.

She is responsible, but it is up to her voters.

As an incumbent Kendra enjoyed an advantage. She could have enjoyed an easy reelection, despite the 1 million (how many people whose nutrition is deficient could that 1 mil help?). For all the pretensions of folks living in JP most are still dumb as logs preferring what is predictable and easy and so like good liberal lemmings choosing the familiar name.

So hopefully this Trump licker will have wasted his money trying to defeat an incumbent who shot sabotaged her own ease to re-elction.

You left out that all of these candidates have released statements saying they do not want the support of this PAC

When I link to another news outlet's story, I want to give the gist of it while not posting so much of it that you wouldn't want to link to that story.

Sometimes I may err by saying too little, but I thought the key thing here was that Davis was spending all this money, since it's an allegedly independent PAC that the candidates have no control over.

You have a voice most of us do not have. With that comes responsibility.

You have a voice most of us do not have.

And you could have a voice that would probably be taken a bit more seriously if you could be arsed to get an account.

First this dude, and now Harvard. I hope they all stay.

He’s spending his advertising money in the Herald. That ought to reach a few hundred people in the districts and change the mind of absolutely nobody.

This MAGA stooge, like George Regan, is the kiss of death for anyone they see and support as the next Great White Hope. Someone tell Erin Murphy and Josh Kraft they are next.

is trying to save the City. The current administration and City Council are useless. Businesses will become reluctant to invest here, then we are all in trouble.

Anon = useless.

Lara commisioned The Crash Lab to perform an independent investigation into the crash and they have concluded that she was driving 27 mph, not the 53 mph alleged in the police report.

Story in the Globe.

So even if she was traveling only 2mph over the speed limit... she still hit a house, without a driver's license, in an uninsured vehicle. Doesn't exonerate her like she seems to think

Certainly not anyone that has been to Centre St in JP.
