Amy Weingarten Salvucci was a bit startled when she looked out her window on Washington Street near Peters Park in the South End this morning to see a hawk eyeing her right back.

I think it's an immature Red-tailed Hawk. Note the belly band :)

Not only the belly band but the build. Red-tailed Hawks are large and stocky buteo hawks, whereas Cooper’s Hawks are accipiters. Accipiters look somewhat like falcons.

This is a red tailed hawk! The belly band (brown stripe) is diagnostic when the hawk is perched like this. Cooper's hawks have an orangey belly (adult) or even brown streaking all over the chest/belly (juv) and generally have a black capped look :)
