Pour one out for another Rte. 1 landmark eatery

Drew Mulholland reports the venerable Continental in Saugus will be closing the week before Thanksgiving after having served food for 72 years. So that leaves, what, the Kowloon and the Leaning Tower of Pizza, um, Prince Pizza as the last of the big Rte. 1 restaurants?

I'm sure they'll sell it to a developer who will put up condos just like other places on Rt1.
There's probably more value in the real estate than the business itself.

Boarder cafe has been on rt 1 since the 80’s too. Use to be next to Hiltop…

Yeah but not in the same location. Now its down the road a bit on the opposite side.

Its not the same. Their new location is nice and bigger. But there was something about the old location. Ironically another texmex place opened up in its old space...

(or I haven't been up that way in too long)... but don't forget Polcari's. The original location.

This is kinda sad. I didn't grow up here in MA, but I have friends that did. They all said their parents went to the Continental when they wanted to go to a nice, classy, sit down restaurant. I've never been so I can't vouch for how classy or nice it was... but they always spoke highly of the place.

But alas, people's eating habits change and so do tastes. I guess the tide has turned for the Continental now too. Following in the line of other places that used to have long wait lines but have aged out..

I think the only time I went there was after a wedding or a graduation or something, so that tracks.

This is what I gathered what people went to the Continental for.. parties, weddings, graduations, big celebrations where you want good food. It was that place that was so special, you often only went once in a blue moon.

prime rib and popovers. Also a place I probably haven't been back to in over ten years, so it's hard for me to complain that is has gone by the wayside.

Support your favorite local indies, and don't keep the hidden gems secret for your own benefit.

Magoo has pooped tastier poops than what the Kowloon can serve up. Magoo.

Thank you for that visual. Why couldn't you stay away?
