Gang initiation?
Not so surprising, when one thinks about it.

If Southie's overall history of violence is any indication, the random beatings of innocent people on East Broadway should come as no surprise, especially to those who are well aware of Southie's overall history.
Give me a break.

You watch to many movies. Get out of the basement, one incident doesn't correlate into a problem with the entire neighborhood.
When I lived in Allston at a time when Groups of kids where roaming The Brighton/Brookline, looking for parties, to start fights. And you know what, the neighborhoods, and the area where and still are pretty damn safe.

Gay-bashings and trans-bashings are a common occurrence in Southie.
I'm not super surprised to hear about unprovoked violence there.
(Not to sound like tenforty or anything; I seriously was pointing out the privilege one has if one isn't aware of the rather frequent unprovoked violence in this city.)

People need to get there heads out of the sand. this is not a common occurrence in south boston and if it is , it certainly has not been a common occurence in city point area of south boston. We currently have few too many police to cover all the bars in south boston and deal with all the crime issues in south boston, drug use, petty crime etc.
These kids are punks , where are the parents. why don't they know where there kids are at at 1:15 in the morning. The most recent incident at M street park, these kids came out of the woodwork. why are they so angry ? What are they trying to prove?

Hey Sobo, stick with the facts first of all, it happened at 10:37 pm, not 1:30 in the morning!! People like you who lie and try to make something bigger than it is should pay close attention when in SOUTHIE, not sobo!!! All of you outsiders know Southie is not the Back Bay and on occasion there is violence, but you still moved there knowing that and what you were getting into!! No Pity here!!

Thanks for speaking the truth man!
I was getting a little annoyed with all these other posters, trying to suggest to gullible outsiders that the traditional southie ethos was dead. It ain't dead just yet! Brain dead muscle-heads full of aggression, rocking sweat-stained wife-beaters and dodging bleary-eyed alcoholics swerving the roads in beater cars may not rule the day everyday anymore, but let's not pretend it isn't there. And that's just the women!
I joke, I joke. But seriously, there's still a significant percentage of people you will meet in southie who grew up there and think that anonymous beatings of strangers is a valuable cultural export that they need to preserve. And they will brag about it. Especially when drinking.

we cant be serious, I have been here for 12 years and lets be honest most of the Southie "kids" that have grown up over the last 10-15 years are richer and better off than most young professionals that have moved here. Reason being, their parents and grandparents are the "sellouts" not the "yuppies" as they are the ones that have sold there home for 150% profit. So "southie" wannabe thugs grow up and get a job .

Puh-lease.
Guess you missed the article in Boston Phoenix "How Gay is Southie?"
http://thephoenix.com/boston/life/91293-how-gay-is...
"Socially ubiquitous scenester and Southie real-estate agent Ricardo Rodriguez is a gay man who predominately sells properties in the South End, Beacon Hill, Downtown, and South Boston. He has noticed an influx of young professionals to South Boston.
“When it comes to budding gay communities,” he says,” South Boston is the most promising. It’s youthful and its price points on real estate are great. Culturally, the area’s proximity to the South End has created an interesting synergy between the neighborhoods....
Despite Southie’s once loathsome reputation, he says, it no longer carries a menacing vibe toward outsiders trying to muscle in. “It’s actually very cool,” he explains. “There are a lot of young people and edgy stuff happening there. I’m not surprised that you are seeing a viable, vibrant, identifiable gay community in South Boston. I am surprised that there isn’t a gay bar already there."

I have lived in Southie for the better part of 10years. I have been randomly attacked on 2 different occassions. Once by two teenagers at 3am in Andrews Sq and once on Broadway at midnight. I know of AT LEAST 7 or 8 other friends that have experienced the same. I love Southie and that will never change and neither will the random attacks just young dumb bored punk kids with nothing better to do.

Hey-
Get out of the 80's ...Southie is a shell of what it used to be. It is no longer the "Departed" wanna bees or whitey lackeys...
South Boston is now a place for young professionals and family's to live and grow. A place to 5 mins from both Downtown and the South End and a walk to beautiful beaches. Attacks like this are so far and few between. Stop watching Ben Affleck movies....

Hey Buddy-
Get out of the 80's and stop watching Ben Affleck movies and come walk around Southie. It is no longer flooded with Bulger wannabees or a gangsters paradise. It is a place to raise a family or live post college . It is a great location . 5 minutes from Downtown Boston and 5 minutes from the South End. Best of all just a short walk from beautiful beaches.

"Southie's overall history of violence.." ?? Try spending a night in certain other parts of Boston and if you come out alive tell us all about Southie's history of violence. As for gay-bashing, please check the stats and see how much more pervasive that particular activity is in other areas of Boston.
Any police officer will tell you, and the statistics back this up, Southie is one of the safest places around. That's one of the reasons you all are coming here, isn't it? And that's why when things like this happen, neighborhood groups come together, and with the assistance of local police, try to do something about it. And that's why they'll be going after the drug dealers. So, whether you're a dealer or just a punk, watch out. These groups will never let Southie become like a lot of other Boston neighborhoods.
Another random attack 11/19
By Life-Long South...

As stated in one of the prior comments, where are these children's parents ? Do they not know where or what their children are doing ? Or is it that they just don't care ? Another random attack occurred on the evening of Friday, November 18th at 10pm in the area of the Gate of Heaven church (East 4th/5th between H/I Streets). There was a group of CHILDREN, ages 13 to 17, that were drinking in the church parking lot and randomly lashed out and started beating on a young man. The altercation then spilled into a neighbors GATED front yard, the group threw a large picnic bench at the home (which caused damage to the siding) and refused to leave the property, even after the homeowner's came out to help the young man who was in trouble. Numerous calls were made by neighbors, but officers did not arrive on scene until after the group had scattered. The CHILDREN continued to harass the neighbors & yet again, it seemed as though nothing was done to try and detained these minors. With more than one random incident taking place, why are there no visible officers patrolling the area(s) of concern ? Why are these CHILDREN not being detained and held accountable for their actions and causing such disturbances in what used to be a wonderful, family oriented neighborhood ? The lighting around the Gate of Heaven Church/School and the Tynan School is horrible ! Maybe if there was more lighting in the area(s) of concern and a larger police presence, maybe these incidents would not take place.
