Haymarket Pizza, which has been selling pizza by the slice in the heart of Haymarket for 50 years, announced today it's shutting down, the latest in a string of decades-old Boston places that have disappeared over the past couple of years.

The no-nonsense pizzeria originally opened as Al Capone's.

Jennifer Dines pays a visit to the Pleasant Cafe, which has been serving pizza and other fare on Washington Street in Roslindale for 80 years now.

The article is the start of a program by the Boston Preservation Alliance and Boston Main Streets with the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School, where, over the next year, students will write their own profiles of other "legacy" businesses in their neighborhoods.

The Boston Licensing Board voted last week to allow the newly expanded Pat's Pizza, 2254 Dorchester Ave., serve beer, wine and liqueurs , if a license from a closed restaurant shows up soon. Read more.

Pizza Oggi, which originally opened on Perkins Street in Jamaica Plain, then moved downtown, then moved to Harvard Square, is getting ready to re-open in its original location on Perkins Street in Hyde Square, next to the Haven.

Trump flag flying in West Roxbury

Even after the events of last week, the owner of the two-story building at Washington and Grove streets in West Roxbury remains a Trump supporter and so has kept flying a flag reading "Trump 2020: No more bullshit" from a flagpole at the top of the building.

Car that slammed into pizza place on Broadway in South Boston

The Boston Fire Department reports that a driver crashed into McGoo's Pizzeria on West Broadway at Dorchester Street around 1 a.m. The driver was taken to the hospital and six residents of the building had to be evacuated. Firefighters used a load-bearing column to shore up the building until it could be inspected and repaired.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the Kenmore Square Uno, the last of its kind in all of Boston, has served its last deep dish. Fans of whatever the chain keeps trying to push now instead of deep dish will have to just head on down to the Dedham Mall now (even their corporate HQ has moved out of town - from West Roxbury to Norwood). The chain has been in financial trouble for years, long before Covid-19.

Deno's in West Roxbury re-opening

The sign on the front door of Deno's Pizza on Centre Street in West Roxbury offers hope to people who want to surprise mom with a large pie, announcing a Sunday re-opening (although the 9th is Saturday). Deno's closed at the beginning of April due to coronavirus concerns.

Boston Restaurant Talk reports the Uno Pizzeria and Grill on Boylston Street has closed for good, leaving just one Uno left in the entire city (plus its headquarters, in West Roxbury).

The Boston Licensing Board yesterday gave Alex Pizza, 1254 Washington St., formal permission to stay open until 3 a.m.

The pizza place had asked for permission to extend its licensed closing time from midnight after being cited by police in May for staying open past midnight.

A Washington Street pizza place that has been staying open until 4 a.m. even though its license calls for a midnight closing was scheduled for two hearings before the Boston Licensing Board this week - one to answer to a citation issued by police , the other to formally ask permission to stay open to, if not 4 a.m., at least 3 a.m. Read more.
