If you stand on Washington Street at Summer and Winter in Downtown Crossing at look up above the building that houses the Corner Mall, you'll see a lionish gargoyle looking for a particularly plump pedestrian to chow down on. But if you look alllll the way up, at the very top of the building, you'll see a line of screaming gargoyles who have had quite enough of the classical music the Corner insists on loudly playing at the Washington Street entrance.

The music!
I live across the street and look at these several times a day... can confirm... they hate the ghastly music almost as much as me! Sincerely, someone moving soon
You Moved To DTX
...the noise is too much for you.
Got it.
Classical Music
The classical music is there for a reason. That corner had become a gathering place and hangout for gang members, truant students and other youth who were generally making a nuisance of themselves. Someone hit on the idea of the music, which acted as a repellent to the mischief makers.
Some passersby may find it annoying, but it was an excellent nonviolent solution.
Ah
So basically what entire said it was in the 80s, 90s, and 00s.
Speaking as...
...a professional musician who was trained in classical music, I appreciate the music at DTX.
Though it doesn't deter everyone - the homeless guy that I privately refer to as "the human shofar" given the periodic shofar-like outbursts he makes, seems to thrive in the classical music setting.
I never noticed those! I
I never noticed those! I think the music is to discourage loitering. It's hard to look cool standing on a street corner when classical music is playing. They blast it in front of the 7/11, too!
