Boston Police tweeted this afternoon:
Missing: Wally the Green Monster, If seen please call Boston Police.
About an hour later, police updated: Wally was back, safe and sound at Fenway. What at first sounded like a case of a dementia-suffering Wally, or perhaps a cruel prank by a Yankees fan, turned out to have a much simpler/stupider explanation: An employee who has authorization to wear the suit decided to take a walk around outside Fenway with the suit on - without permission. As crusading reporter Ryan Schulteis (no doubt to be tabbed to play crusading reporter Ryan Schulteis in the impending Affleck caper flick based on the incident) tweeted:
@RedSox say this employee normally wears the costume & chose to take it around the city today. No word on any disciplinary action.

Wally's only been around since 1997. That is the only year since that was worse than what this year will shape up to be!

Wasn't the backstory on Wally- when he was introduced in '97- that he'd been living inside Fenway since it had opened or something like that?

The back story was that he had been behind the wall all the time and the guys running the scoreboard had managed to coax him out on to the field. He really only got popular after the team gave him a better back story and started pushing the doll.

What are the chances that some six year old sees this on WBZ in an hour and finds out that Wally's not real? Hell of a way to learn.
Ummm...

Proprietary mascot of a multi-million dollar sports team in a billion dollar company? That shit's taken seriously.
I thought the helicopter was a bit much, myself though.
(I'm also firmly in hte camp that this was staged for PR purposes.)
