Fun with destructive pests: Make your own Asian Longhorned Beetle ring
By adamg on Tue, 04/09/2013 - 7:57am
Fun for a rainy day: Directions for making a beetle ring out of black construction paper, white paint and some pipe cleaners. Looks cool and introduces you to the bug that has forced the feds to chop down thousands upon thousands of trees from Worcester to Jamaica Plain.
Kids can use their ALB ring to teach others about this invasive insect. They can tell others what an ALB looks like, use their hands to make the ALB look as if it is walking on a tree, or tell others how the ALB antennae help them find each other.

Remember those bus wraps?
The ones with the giant beetles on them?
When I had a question about a beetle that I found and didn't recognize the species, my kids told me it was not an Asian Longhorn and exactly what features it lacked.
All because they saw the buses. Bugs got their attention - and giant bugs on buses meant that there are already a lot of now teens who know their Asian Longhorns.
This is a cool way to create a new wave of beetle savvy younguns.
This is awesome!
