Anybody know what this building was used for?

Edit: Thanks for the replies, guys.

Address: 126 E Howard St Quincy, Massachusetts (Don't know if this is close enough to Boston for you guys...)

Building's clearly abandoned and mostly boarded up, but the main entrance (amazingly) hasn't had all of its glass broken in yet. The way the upper floors look, seems like it was abandoned a long time ago, but from the first few floors it looks like a fresh closure.

I swear, why would nobody want to use it as the base of their new criminal empire? Looks defendable enough.

Unless it has some dark history inside...

So anybody know about this place? Just wonderin'.

Assessor's database says it was owned by General Dynamics Corp 1965-1992 then by American Overseas Marine- which I believe is a division of General Dynamics- until 2005. Looks like it has been held by various Real Estate LLCs since. Creepy looking building though!

According to Crane Library the Fore River Shipyard was nominally at 97 E Howard St. Picture matches the building.

(My grandfather was a foreman in the boiler shop after rising from an apprentice.)

My father, known as Willie, started also as an apprentice, and became a tin knocker ^ ^. Eventually manager of Sheet Metal Dept. ( I wasn 't born yet). I am 88 now, my first job was in the employment office, just inside the gate on E. Howard St., 1947

I forgot what it was used for, but it is part of the Fore River Shipyard. It's loaded with asbestos among other problems and it is not economically practical to renovate it. If I had to guess, I think the windows were removed to deter squatters. A lot of the Shipyard looks like an industrial wasteland but the current owners are doing a lot of good things there too.

However, the property across the street, 116 E Howard, was owned by General Dynamics through 1965.

Google Maps Street View has an interesting view of this building

Interesting that they would just leave it all open air and what not. Then again I do see the point that it would deter break-ins since there's nothing really to see (or take).

(I also wonder if it has to do with the asbestos in the building.. rather than have it sit and fester, it can blow away! /s)
