Find it odd that one of Marc's (the Hidden Boston guy) suggestions was Sunset Grill? Is there another place with the same name? I don't think Allston is that close to Fenway, personally.

Anyway, I immediately thought Island Creek would be a choice place for a date in Fenway.

Island creek is wonderful of you can get a seat.

We always go to brasserie Jo. Fantastic food and service, white tablecloths, great intimate atmosphere and continental music. It's French Provincial and substantially less than island creek.

If something was fishy, you'd think he'd have mentioned the Sunset Cantina, still way up Comm Ave, but at least 50% closer to Kenmore than Sunset Grill. (Same owner.)

don't seem to be responding to the "dinner-date" question but rather "where is the food good," "what do you think is a fun place," or the like. For beer lovers, the Yard House??? That's a dinner date???

A year and a half ago, if I'm understanding the question correctly, I would have said unhesitatingly Trattoria Toscana. Now that it's no longer an option (unless you want to traipse to Zamir's new place up in Salem), I agree with the recommendation for Taberna de Haro. Across St. Mary's from the Fenway proper (Audubon Circle, if you want to be literal about it) and not far from a lot of the other recommended places. Relatively quiet, intimate, and romantic inside (Citizens would be a nightmare for an intimate date, ditto Hojoko, judging from my one experiecne there, and Eastern Standard has its own issues in that regard; can't speak to Island Creek, but the references to assuming you can get a table aren't promising), with maybe a Spanish guitar player on the right night. Good food made for sharing and good wine (and even some interesting cocktails). A less intimate, less romantic, but nice outside option, a lot less crowded together and calmer (Beacon Street, not Kenmore Square) than Eastern Standard's.

The Gyu Kaku suggestion (also across St. Mary's from the Fenway, and right across Beacon Street from TdH), might be a good choice in the right circumstances, with a different sort of food sharing and a lot of interaction with your date.

Also agree that Tiger Mama would be a good choice for the right sort of date.

For TdH, Gyu Kaku, and MeiMei, you can also drop by for a drink with us old farts and hags (horrified reaction in an on-line review by a precious twenty-something a few years ago) hanging out at the bar at O'Leary's.

If you're that sort of person, you could instead go to Waxy's further up the block from O'Leary's. But maybe you're waiting breathlessly for the Tilted Kilt to open over on Brookline Avenue.

And you ask the field? If this were Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, this would be where you phone a friend, not ask the audience.

recommendations aren't for everybody. Sorry I missed this request over the weekend, but the kind of places I might choose have mostly been name-checked already.

I would ask the qualifying question: "Do you need to worry about Sox pre-game crowds or no?" A yes would scratch a couple of worthy places (like Eastern Standard) off my list. For a first date, I'd be thinking Hojoko, Island Creek, Taberna de Haro, Audubon Boston, Tiger Mama, Tapestry (the Expo Kitchen side), Sichuan Gourmet, India Quality or UNI, depending on the person.

Those of you who didn't mention Mei Mei, what?! You are missing out. Fun, fresh, spicy, amazing creations with texture, beautiful ambiance, perfect for a date. The staff are seriously talented. Also surprisingly cheap for the quality.
