Pipe work on Charles Street in Boston

For the past few days, workers have been doing something with a large pipe under Charles Street and into the Public Garden. Manish Sinha gives us a view of the work in the snow today.

Proposed Olympic beach volleyball stadium on Boston Common.

That's Charles Street on the left. See it larger.

Plans released by Boston 2024 show most of the Common and a significant portion of the Public Garden - including the Make Way for Ducklings statues - off limits to the public during the Olympics. Construction of a 16,000-seat beach-volleyball stadium and related structures, meanwhile, would shut the ball fields and other parts of the Common for months before the games.

Message in window of Beacon Hill Figs announces another shutdown.

Barely a month after Todd English's Figs on Charles Street closed for repairs and then re-opened, it's shut again.

Sara snapped this photo of the window this evening, featuring a prominent apology for being "temporarily" closed. The restaurant is one of the just three outposts left in English's rapidly shrinking Boston empire, the others being the other Figs in Charlestown and Bonfire at Logan Airport.

She adds:

Beehive hairdo in Boston Pride parade

Aside from a brief and not very heavy spot of rain, it was a perfect day for the annual Pride parade from Copley Square to City Hall Plaza.

We stationed ourselves on Charles Street. By the time it was all over, the kidlet had built up quite the collection of beads.

City Councilor Josh Zakim says he doesn't hate lawyers - he's one himself - but he says he concerned that too many professionals are taking over street-level storefronts on Charles Street and the Beacon Hill side of Cambridge Street and wants to try to slow the process.

Zakim, who represents most of Beacon Hill, wants to make professional offices a "conditional" use on the two streets. The proposal would still let the agents and brokers move in, but only after a hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals.

A peeved citizen complains:

Bike attached to street sign was removed due to filming location on Charles St. Completely unacceptable for someone's property and only mode of transportation to be taken when there was absolutely ZERO signs warning bicyclists that their bikes would be towed. Very disappointed that the city is bowing to stupid film scouts demands that directly impede citizens daily life.

What they're filming.

Fallen tree limbs on Charles Street, Beacon Hill

Sarah Connors surveyed the scene on Charles Street this afternoon, after the wind detached some tree limbs and gravity brought them crashing to the ground - except where cars where in the way.

Ari Ofsevit photographed a woman who might very well be a member of the Beacon Hill Historical Commission pondering whether the tree might have been on the ground long enough to qualify for historic protection (or maybe not):

The state Department of Environmental Protection holds two meetings Thursday to consider the MBTA's request that it be allowed to shimmy out of requirements to extend the Blue Line to Charles Street.

The Department of Transportation, which now includes the T, formally asked its environmental counterparts last year to absolve it of the need to spend $49 million to design a $750 million project it says it has no money to build, even if it wanted to.

City Councilor Mike Ross (Beacon Hill, Back Bay) wants to make it tougher for banks to open along Beacon Hill's main shopping street.

By adamg - 1/7/12 - 9:18 pm

Ross Levanto explains the growing outrage on Beacon Hill over Capital One's plans to turn the Charles Street Market into Yet Another Bank:

One neighbor noted how the market is the only place on the street she can visit late at night when she feels threatened. Another talked about the over saturation of banks on Charles Street.

Capital One goes before the Zoning Board of Appeals on Feb. 28 for permission to financialize the corner market.

An incensed Beacon Hill resident or visitor complains:

Huge sandwich board sign on Charles Street. There are almost 2 dozen from Charles Circle to Beacon Street. I believe they are against Boston Sign Code. Now as one store owner sets one up, they are proliferating down the street. Please warn owners. Thank you.

Both the Boston Globe and Boston Herald are reporting that an electrical short circuit spark was the cause of the July 8th basement fire at DeLuca's Market on Beacon Hill.

“It is known that there was an electrical problem earlier that morning that resulted in an electrician being called and then doing work in the basement,” Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said.

Megan Johnson, who admits to stealing toilet papers from public loos in her current unemployment, still tried to help out the panhandler who asked her for change at Boylston and Charles today. She gave him what she had, which was a bunch of pennies - which he then threw at her. But the Boloco people who saw the whole thing gave her a free smoothie - and she reports her regular panhandler, at Beacon and Charles, volunteered to go find the first guy and beat him up after she told him what had happened.
