People with phones set up for emergency messages were warned this afternoon to leave the Esplanade as a line of thunderstorms approached south of Boston. State Police stopped letting people onto the Esplanade to reduce the number of people they might have to move out in a hurry had the heavy rain and lightning reached the Charles, which it didn't. And only 9,000 people will be allowed in, WCVB reports. But fireworks at the Common and Harborfest and July 3rd fireworks over the harbor.

Peter Wilson reports the Boston Pops have cancelled their spring season and that they're still considering whether to perform on July 4th at the Hatch Shell and this summer in Tanglewood.
Molly Lanzarotta took in the Pops rehearsal concert at the Hatch Shell this evening.
The lawn in front of the Hatch Shell doesn't open until 5 p.m. for tonight's Fourth Third festivities, but Leslee spotted people lining up this morning to get in at the stroke of 5.

A California photographer who claims the BSO owes him lots of money for the photographs it used for some Boston Pops concerts last year is, of course, suing.
The Pops try for the second year to garner a world record for the most people singing Christmas carols in one place at one time, starting at noon at the Christian Science plaza. They'll need nearly 10,000 people to join in.
