Both escalators blocked at Porter Square

A roving UHub photographer snapped the situation this morning at Porter Square, where both escalators - and one of the stairs - were blocked for some sort of repair work.

The Dorchester Reporter details the longest of this year's MBTA "surge" repair shutdowns: The 24-day closing of the Red Line's Braintree branch, which starts Friday.

The Orange Line signal woes between North Station and Back Bay continue, so the T is advising people to take the Green Line instead, which is great if you're want to get between North Station and Back Bay, not so hot if your final destination is, oh, somewhere closer to Oak Grove or Forest Hills.

How bad is it? In addition to signals not signalling, here's State Street station shortly after 3 p.m.

Just Kidding

The tracks are getting better and better, but, oops, something blew out all the power on the Red, Orange, Green and Blue lines around 1:30 p.m. The MBTA reported about 15 minutes later that Johnny plugged the power cord back in, except, oops, briefly not on the Orange Line between Stony Brook and Forest Hills.

Downtown Crossing on the Orange Line, all clean and spiffy

You can't tell from a photo, of course, but Sebastian Stockman checked in from Downtown Crossing this morning: "Downtown Crossing smells…clean?!?"

The MBTA reports it's managed to fix a Red Line blockage at Porter caused by a train up and dying in the system's deepest station.

The day did not start auspiciously on the Red Line, where riders were forced into early morning bustitution between Braintree and JFK/UMass because, the T reports an overnight maintenance vehicle derailed at Wollaston.

Meanwhile, over on the Orange Line, riders faced delays, first due to a recalcitrant switch at Oak Grove and later because of a signal problem at Forest Hills.

The Dorchester Reporter reports not everybody is enamored of a city proposal to do to Columbia Road between Blue Hill and Massachusetts avenues what happened on Columbus Avenue. Quotes one pizza-shop owner who predicts dedicated bus lanes would add 20 minutes to all his deliveries.

Tim Lawrence was on one of the new Orange Line trains when it pulled out of Community College, made a couple of loud banging sounds and then died on the flyover towards Sullivan Square, shortly before 7 p.m. He reports on the wait and eventual evacuation: Read more.

NBC Boston reports on the fatality which happened after the man fell on the tracks and came into contact with the third rail on the southbound tracks shortly before noon.

Mystery train that's just crossed Massachusetts Avenue

Stationed at Tremont Street and Massachusetts Avenue, roving UHub photographer Robert Choate had a perfect location to watch a couple of new Red Line cars get delivered on flatbed trucks with a police escort tonight. Read more.

Ari Ofsevit reports he had to sit on on the luggage rack in a very crowded Silver Line bus this afternoon but at least he got a good view of the sunset over the Tobin Bridge.

At 8:16 p.m., the MBTA reported Red Line delays of up to 30 minutes due to a downed tree on the tracks near Quincy Center. At 8:34 p.m., the T reported bustitution between North Quincy and Quincy Center due to the Kilmerian obstruction. At 9:19 p.m., the T reported it had extended the shuttle service all the way to Braintree. As of 10:15 p.m., the T was reporting the Braintree branch was still blocked by that darned tree.

A Boston man with a history of whipping it out in public was ordered held without bail for at least 90 days his arrest for outbound masturbating at Beachmont on the Blue Line in full view of a woman heading inbound Tuesday morning, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.

Transit Police report a man who plowed his 2004 Honda into the back of an MBTA bus at Columbus Avenue and Dimock Street - where there are two center bus lanes marked off with barriers and red pavement paint - around 6:30 p.m. yesterday told arriving officers he was just following his car's GPS. Transit Police report arresting a 56-year-old man they say "committed a lewd act" in the direction of women at both Beachmont and Maverick on the Blue Line yesterday morning - and that he's been pulling the same stunt since at least 2016.

East Boston Municipal Court records show that Francis Costa, Jr. was scheduled for arraignment today on a charge of open and gross lewdness, subsequent offense.

Car after collision with 60 bus

Riders in an inbound 60 bus were jolted when the driver of a Toyota minivan slammed into it on Rte. 9 just before Chestnut Hill Avenue around 3:30 p.m. Read more.

The MBTA is reminding Green Line riders that the B Line will be shut between Boston College and Babcock Street between Aug. 2 and 11 for some of those accelerated track repair sessions.

Bustitution, of course, except the buses won't stop at Allston Street, Griggs Street or Packards Corner for accessibility reasons.
