State rep candidate says kid with gun at South Boston High shows need for anti-bully law

Michael McGee, running to replace Brian Wallace in the 4th Suffolk district (South Boston and part of Dorchester), suggested today that that kid charged with bringing a loaded gun into the South Boston Education Complex and aiming it at pursuing cops might not have done so if the state had a strong law against bullying.

In a statement, he said:

The officers at the Odyssey High School should be commended for likely preventing a serious act of violence. This incident, however, should be seen as a wake-up call to our Boston Public schools. The main reason for kids carrying weapons to school is that they don't feel safe and feel they require protection. We have a moral obligation to ensure the safety of all our children going to school. As your State Representative, I would have supported the Anti-Bullying Bill and I will work to strengthen this law so that schools are safe havens for children, not bullies.

C'mon - the kid tried to sneak in a side door so as to avoid the metal detector. Trying to protect himself? More likely he was going to shoot someone, most likely a teacher. You'll have to do better than that McGee, and using this unfortunate incident as a part of your political communication strategy is pretty abhorrent.

The anti-bullying bill was strengthened - an anti-bullying expert has already stated that the bill is solid - and it is about to be signed into law -

Lastly, a wake-up call? Are you serious? Why do you think schools have metal detectors? And have had them for several years? Where have you been?

Is it possible that anyone who wuold illegally carry a gun would worry about an anti-bullying law? It wouldn't seem to me that this kid would care about anything like that.

Boston Police? After all, since he pointed the gun at them, obviously he felt that he required protection from them.

Is this McGee guy serious? Yeah, those bully cops, they are just awful. It wasn't this kid's fault, they made him do it. Give me a break. This kid was a thug, tried to avoid metal detectors, and pointed an illegal firearm at cops. Bullies? This has nothing to do with bullies. This McGee character seems like a nice kid, but he is seriously out of touch. He sounds like the classic limousine liberal from the suburbs. I think he'd fit in very nicely in Cambridge.
This quote pretty much sums it all up:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

The main reason for kids carrying weapons to school is that they don't feel safe and feel they require protection.

But why are people after them, is the question.

I think Mcgee should have just commended the cops instead of going into a tirade about how kids dont feel safe thats why the young man brought a gun to school. Mcgee is in over is head in this race. He is an out of towner trying to shed light on South Boston High. He is in over his head in this race and I am starting to wonder why he is running in the first place. He prob thought he could win because he met some people in the nighborhood when working for flaherty campaign. Thats just not going to cut it.

Tirade? He mentioned it once. Seems to me that you are looking for something to Bitch about. By the way...Your comments sound like a 14 year old. Are you even old enough to vote?

At least Michael McGee has an opinion. Where are the other Candidates during these issues? Oh, I forgot, they are busy Campaigning.

Mike McGee gets it! I believe that kids who carry guns to School aren't carrying them to commit armed robberies, but to protect themselves from Gang Members and Bullies. Although the respondents in here just don't get it, McGee does! This is a Social Dilemma that needs to be addressed immediately. I didn't see anywhere in Michael McGee's response where he condones carrying guns, but he does understand the Social and Economic factors that play a part in this issue. It's easy to bury your head in the sand and claim that it's "just a few bad apples that are doing this". However, it take more of a Civic and Intellectual perspective to get to the very heart of this Social Crisis. I believe that Michael McGee has what it takes to solve such issues.

Mike Mcgee is running on the far left in this race.. You know it and I know it...he is way too liberal for South Boston... His views on everything from crime to spending and lets not even get started where he stands on social issues are on par with an extreme liberal running from cambridge... He is an opportunist all that volunteer work he says he has done over the past year was done so he could say he has helped out for this and that when he runs for office the whole thing is a gimmick.. and if he looses i will make a bet with anyone all that volunteer mcgee stuff will stop dead cold..

So, Mike McGee is "way too liberal" for South Boston? Wasn't it your guy that was the regional organizer for Joe Biden? Dude, you really should do your homework!

How many people will Mike Mcgee drag from his hometown of Norwood to his standout this saturday. How many beacon hill insiders is he going to try to solicit support from? heard he is asking majority leader state rep Rogers from Norwood to standout for him. Doesnt he have better things to do like look after the constituents in his hometown of Norwood. How many southie people will be there supporting Mcgee 5? Southie people are leaving that campaign. Does he still have any neighborhood support? Most of the southie people thartmarched with him in the parade and collected signatures for him have left. When will mcgee jump out?

Great Standout for Michael McGee yesterday! All great people from the South Boston Community. Very nice people who are active in the South Boston Community. Lot's of good positive talk going around the Community about McGee's Campaign. My South Boston Neighbors said that they like Michael... Will Vote for Michael, and wish him the best of Luck! There's really not anything bad you can say about Michael and his Work Ethic. I'm an 87 Year old Vet and I really like his message about Beacon Hill being "Broken" and his Educational Platform for better Schools. Also, his possition on Waste and Abuse at the State House. The other kids seem nice but have no sustenence to there "message".

Great Standout lol are you serious? The Mcgee campaign at max had 30 ! 30 for a standout is pathetic the two other canidates who are from South Boston Mcgonagle and Collins had well over 100. Mike this is not about you this is not your seat. The Mcgee camp has no more money and all the local southie residents have jumped ship besides maybe 4. You need to know when to hold them and know when to fold them. Its time to drop out Mike!
