With the state having pretty significant debt issues, why is it putting 4 million into this?

Let someone rehabilitate it as a private business if it is that sustainable, and assume the costs themselves. Not put the cost onto everyone, most who will never set foot here.

There is no shortage of better uses for the funding.

For being the only person in MA to pay taxes! How dare the state not check with you before they make decisions on spending your money!

So no one can ever question state spending?

This was an ice rink. When they finally got around to rehabbing it, the local community didn't want an ice rink. No surprise there - African Americans are not big hockey players. So they gave this old rink a hard floor, and they'll use it for various purposes.

Of course now, less than half a mile away, the Jackson Square group wants to get funding for an ice rink. Good thinking.

What an unfortunate racially biased and ignorant about the facts, comment. While there may have been some racially charged dynamics that had to do with the demise of this rink, it had more to do with the neglect of Mayor's White and Flynn and past Governor's who neglected, not only the center, but for decades the community because it is occupied by largely an African-American citizenry. Get your facts straight.

btw: While growing up in Roxbury some of my best friends were African-American (they still are) and we all cheered on the Bruins "score for Bobby Orr!!!" "go Black and Gold". Also fyi a hip hop group (RSO) from Mattapan made it cool internationally to wear hockey jerseys. Go B's, thumbs up and thumbs down to your post.

a year 'round facility that could house many athletic endeavors. It's a state owned property that sat neglected for 24 years.

The ice rink at Jackson is intended to replace the temporarily located Kelly Rink which is also a state owned property.

Makes sense that the state takes care of its properties.
