"random" alternates
I know of some judges who when "randomly" selecting alternate jurors would "randomly" select the ones that he/she had caught napping during the trial...
Consistency?
In all my jury time, alternates were picked via random drawing right before deliberations began. What's the point in knowing who is an alternate beforehand aside - it only encourages them to pay less attention...

I was an alternate in California. We were told during the jury selection process what our role was. Wish I wasn't an alternate, I did not agree with their ruling.

The trial had been going on for nearly an hour at that point, and he'd already seen the movie.
