Transit Police report an Alewife train hit a woman as it entered Downtown Crossing around 6:40 p.m.

Power was shut in both directions to let firefighters extricate the body of the woman, about 42.

Shuttle buses replaced service between JFK/UMass and Harvard.

The incident happened less than 24 hours after a man wound up under a train at Broadway.

... find this to be an awful time of year.

For the rest of us, that makes it a great time of year to spare a kind thought, or a kind word, or a kind deed, or a smile, for those close to us and for complete strangers... we really never know who's battling what demons.

Bob, you are awesome and there are many more out there I wish could have read your Universal Hub Post of the Year. So true.

not because of the fact it ruins transit for people, but because of the endless nightmares you're giving the MBTA workers that have to remember this for the rest of their lives, plus whoever else got to witness it/clean it up.

Suicide in general is a selfish act...

For some definition of "selfish", I'm sure that is true. Also unkind and irrelevant. This was probably a suicide, but no one except UHub commenters has said so, and so perhaps it would be better to suspend judgment of the deceased woman's motives. In fact, even if it were suicide, it would probably be better.

I wasn't passing judgement on what happened. Clarifying for the poster above.

I didn't think you were. The poster you were responding to, on the other hand, was.

suicide is inherently selfish and find myself eye rolling at those that believe that. we've handed out medals to people that have known what they were about to do would kill them. the world, as people love to forget, is not black and white. i'll admit my statement assumes it was a suicide but it is generally difficult to find oneself in front of red line train by accident.

Exactly, you're essentially enlisting someone to kill you without their consent. That poor driver, I can't imagine how they must feel. Does the MBTA provide any kind of counseling or employee assistance when this kind of thing happens, since it appears to be a regular occurrence?

My friend is a bus driver who saw a shooting at Dudley a few years ago. the T is extremely accommodating to those circumstances. Even gave him a non-driving job for a bit so he could heal some.
