Salt for snow squalls:
Salt for snow squalls: Seriously?
Can't the city EVER skip doing this? I mean, it was SQUALLS that were forecast.
Maybe there's just too much risk in skipping the salt and expecting people to drive with caution.
Or maybe skipping salt is a political third rail. /cynicism
Saving Face?
After MassDOT, DCR and local DPWs collectively dropped the ball last month, claiming they were "caught off-guard," despite my Accuweather app predicting the ice storm at least eight hours beforehand, it's fair to say that they had to save face this time.
Conditions were certainly ripe for a repeat situation, with the ground already very cold due to temperatures barely getting above freezing all day. As someone who biked to work during the aforementioned ice storm, I was mentally preparing for road conditions to be nearly as bad on my way home last night. For what it's worth, none of the roadways that I traveled on in the West End, Downtown, South End and Roxbury were salted/sanded--and I don't think I saw a single salter/sander out there--so I'm honestly surprised to read there was one out there last night. Fortunately things didn't turn out nearly as bad travel-wise.
rock salt salesman
Has to be paying off someone who makes the decision to salt the City streets. Savin Hill must have 40 tons of salt spread on all the streets.
What a waste
Salt trucks?
For a few snow showers that didn't even stick to the road?
Oy.
Somebody didn't go outside
Obviously. It stuck and froze and iced up.
Walked along Mass Ave as the first squall blew in
Along with 35 Mph winds. Still pulling ice shards out of my eyes.
Mayors know the best way to lose an election is to screw up snow removal so expect the city to always err on the side of caution.
Ain't THAT the [wicked sad]
Ain't THAT the [wicked sad] truth!
Saw the small amount of snow late last night--it was cold!
Like every winter, I've been covering my pet Congo African Grey Parrot, Aziza, with her thick quilted cage cover, at night, to keep her warm when she's sleeping and at rest.
It's called "Use It Or Lose It" Budgeting
The private contractors who endow Marty Walsh's campaign fund depend on snow plowing, sanding and salting to get through the winter when roadway paving is nearly impossible. This winter has been slow and is nearing its end, thus, even though all forecasts reported no accumulation, it was politically important to call in the troops and trucks on overtime, lest there be a surplus at the end of the fiscal year and the budget cut. The Democrat idea is to spend it all.
To his credit, former Councilor Charles Yancey attempted to examine the late Mayor Menino's pay-to-play snow removal contract in Charlestown but got no traction (no pun intended). The fawning media, many whose unemployable media peers had gotten jobs as "spokespersons" for everything from Menino's Boston Police to Boston Parks, determined there was "nothing to see here." It would be nice to see the tab for last nights snow "removal" operation after a brief squall. Then connect the contractors with Walsh's campaign contributors. Follow the money...and the sander on a dry road.
