Jonathan Tompkins got a view of Boston firefighters practicing ice rescues at the north end of Jamaica Pond this morning. Despite the warming temperatures of recent days, the ice still held for them - and they had to cut some holes in the ice to practice their rescue techniques.

This is why they don't mind retrieving dogs

All practice to them.
Quite the stretch to say an animal rescue is "all practice"

Training of this nature requires planning and resource allocation.
I'm sure there was additional staffing for the fire stations so those training didn't leave any place shorthanded.
Also EMS services were almost assuredly there, as were comfort stations for those going in the ice and out in the elements during the day.
This is quite different than an actual rescue, even an animal one.
While you're probably never hear the FD professionals say it I'm pretty sure they'd mind even less if you kep your dog (and yourself) off all but the most solid of ice.

Ice rescue scares the crap out of me, I don't mind admitting it. It's really great to see the time and resources committed to developing these skills at BFD.
(also I love typing BFD)
