Centre Street in Jamaica Plain will only be open to pedestrians on Sunday

Centre Street between Jackson Square and the Monument at South Street will become a giant block party - and shut to vehicles - between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday as part of the city's Open Streets program.

Drivers will be able to cross Center at Green and Myrtle streets and Boylston and Moraine streets, but don't even think of trying to turn onto Centre then. Cars parked on that stretch of Centre will be towed starting at 1 a.m.

No Orange Line service between Ruggles and North Station. No shuttle buses -- T says to pound sand and squeeze into 1-car E trains running on Sunday headways. No 39 service out of Forest Hills for most of the day due to this road closure. No waiving of CR fares at Hyde Park, Readville, or on the Needham Line, which could help a small segment of bus-to-Orange riders. There's nothing about CR as an alternative at Forest Hills -- too bad if you're a stored value user needing to transfer downtown, or if you're in the majority of LinkPass holders who use a CharlieCard.

Staying home really isn't an option for service workers: for a lot of people, Sunday pay is still time-and-a-half.

One would hope that a mayor who claims to ride the Orange Line would at least try to coordinate something to make riders' lives easier. But apparently not. Even if the T is being stubborn, the city should at least have come out, acknowledged this pain, and pointed fingers.

That wipes out the #41 and #39 bus along that 1.5 mile stretch of roadway. It will also force people to pay an extra fare to take the Orange Line from Forest Hills to Jackson in order to get the buses that are impacted.

MBTA web site has already noted the diversion.

Worth noting that ADA people that will be impacted will only know if they just happen to look at the MBTA alerts randomly. There is no direct communications organ (such as email) in place that will notify interested parties.

So much for advance planning and transparency I guess.

Also terminates at Ruggles on Sunday for track work, so really they should just make it free for the day because of the reduced service and ridiculous transfers it's going to take to get anywhere downtown. Would have been nice to reroute the buses along the J-Way/Arborway, and why not?

Why would they send the buses down the Jamaicaway? There’s no safe place to stop. And most people aren’t riding through to Forest Hills. The few people who are can use the Orange Line from Jackson.

Stops could be at Perkins, Pond, and keep the South St stops to supplement accessibility and provide a single seat to Fenway/Back Bay without transferring from a degraded half-working OL. J-Way is two lanes and 25MPH (in theory...) so for a temporary stop it doesn't seem impossible. Even if you didn't stop on the J-Way at all that would let you keep the stops on S Huntington near the VA and Angell.

How will this work for connecting streets? I need to arrange an Uber on Sunday for an elderly person with mobility issues who will be staying on a one way street that feeds into Centre.

For bus riders, obviously the 39 and 41 won't run on the closed part of Centre. But it's important to know that the 39 won't run anywhere else south of Heath Street either (i.e. Heath to Boylston/Moraine and Monument to Forest Hills).

Sounds like it wont. I suspect all feeder streets to be blocked off unless they're one of the three allowable crossings. Maybe a convo with any officers at the blocked point to let the Uber in to get the elderly person and then back down the street. Unless they can turn around and drive against the one way.

Maybe a call to E-13 non-emergency line?

Good to know about the 1 am towing start. Also - the parking lots along Centre won't be available to park in, so my backup is now to find a side street. *fingers crossed*
