The Daily Free Press reports on an effort by Warm Up Boston to stop DCR from clearing out the encampment and tossing whatever belongings people there couldn't take with them when told to move.

Can homeless shelters be 100
By anon

Can homeless shelters be 100 percent overhauled and changed with their physical design and operating procedures so that active drug users who are under the influence would be allowed to sleep there? BINGO! Of course this is a trick question. Everyone knows the answer is a big fat NO. What happened to the Franklin Park homeless huts plan ??? Does this mean that more need to be built across the City on City owned lots???
The majority of shelters do.

There are actually very few shelters in the greater Boston area that don't allow PWUD to come in while under the influence. If you get state money, you have to be low barrier, meaning you have to be prepared to work with people who are under the influence, so long as they aren't violent or creating significant disturbances. All of the major shelters- Pine Street, Southampton, Rosie's place, Woods Mullen, Caspar, Y2Y - follow this policy. AFAIK, there are only one or two remaining shelters in the state who have a strict abstinence policy. There are any number of other very valid reasons that people elect to avoid (or don't feel comfortable using) the established shelters, but their policies on drug and alcohol use aren't one of them.
Homeless Encampment on Memorial Drive in Cambridge

A month or so ago, the Mass State police cleared out the encampment on Memorial Drive by the ramp going towards MIT. This was around 10am. I go by there on my way to work every day and always look for the white geese hanging out in that area. I was surprised that I had never noticed the number of tents before. There had to be more than 30 tents. The amount of stuff being thrown away was mind-blowing. I kept looking for information on the news, but nothing.
There are shelters on Storrow

There are shelters on Storrow as well west of BU… at least there were 3-4 weeks ago. Not safe for the unwell, or the motorists. It’s probably the same one?. It’s not “under the BU Bridge” kind of sprawled out beside it stretching west for 50-100 yards, or so. The verge of a motorway is not a humane accommodation. Not a safe place to ambulate near. Not safe for drivers and their passengers either. At best it’s a distraction, at worst an inhabitant will case [cause], or be involved in an accident. Also, do these folks cross Storrow?
So stop being a NIMBY

The only true "anti-homeless" architecture is building more housing.
It’s not the “fact” of more

It’s not the “fact” of more housing it’s the “where” of more housing. Yes, let’s build housing, but 10% Affordable assistance units are the tool of gentrifiers and developers to build where they otherwise might not and who have no long term concern for the effect overpopulation and densification will have on historic locations. People are not a tool to be exploited for other’s ends.
The NIMBY is not a slur, or a bad “word,” (initialism.)
Encampments in Northampton…

As I was doing my mindless drive down route 10 to Easthampton, I noticed tents along the Mill River in Northampton, right near downtown. That really brought it home for me… Because there are lots of homeless people in the western part of the state too.
I count my blessings every day and know how lucky I am to have a roof over my head.
If nothing else

this seems like the wrong time of year to be doing this.
Putting aside the negative

Putting aside the negative effects on neighbors and other park users, encampments are terrible for the environment. Places like the BU Bridge area and the woods behind Alewife are full of massive amounts of loose trash, much of which ends up in the rivers.
