The Catholic church also tells people to help the needy.
Obviously I shouldn't bother helping poor people. After all, pedophile priests.

The problem...
"I consider myself a Catholic and I disagree with the Church on adulterous relationships."
"I consider myself a Catholic and I disagree with the Church on robbery."
"I consider myself a Catholic and I disagree with the Church on murdering people."
Agree with the religion or not, the church has a certain set of rules regarding receiving communion. You don't have to agree with the rules: Just don't receive communion. If you think that the Church is wrong on certain points, why think that they were right on this one?
(Disclaimer: Practicing Catholic, don't receive communion on occasion.)
Until now....
..the American Catholic Church has never asserted a right to tell politicians how to vote on laws (or to to tell voters who they may not vote for), with excommunication as a punishment for failing to obey. John Kennedy went out of his way to make clear that the Church could not dictate political stands to him -- and the Church (back then) agreed his position (on balancing duties as a politician and as a Catholic) was correct.

It's one thing for the church to advocate a policy position with policy makers. That's where the line should be drawn.
Its another thing altogether to become part of the political tug of war by punishing policy makers (elected catholic policy makers) for not agreeing with your position in order to intimidate, threaten and/or increase the church's political reach.
It'll take a generation before the Catholic Church is no longer subject to the tacti of calling attention their aiding and abetting chronic child sex abusers.
What politicians are saying is, you tend to believers faith and accountability in the kingdom of god, and we'll make law in a secular government.
I wholeheartedly agree
And the Catholic church is saying: You go ahead and make law which is against the tenets of the Church, you aren't going to be welcome into the kingdom of God. Since the Catholic Church is the extension of the kingdom of God on Earth, they can't receive communion.
