Fire in the Fens

A large reeds-fed fire is raging in the Victory Gardens section of the Fens. Nothing of real value (real estate-wise) is in danger, as the area is limited by the Muddy River and the main path. The TV stations have started arriving.
William Fleurant reports embers reached I-93 in the Lechmere area.

Still kind of amazing they could catch fire given the flooding of late, though.

The summer before last there was a controlled burn on Agassiz running through the fens. The reeds will be back in no time.
Well that was dramatic
Some pics I took from the Boylston Street bridge over the Muddy. The fire has extinguished itself now, at least on this end of the park. It looks like 95% of the phragmites reeds are now ash.

The bicycle thief
Mike Mennonno, who has a plot in the Victory Gardens and lives nearby, watched and photographed a guy who made off with the bike of somebody busy watching the fire.

Think it could have smoldered all night and then finally flared after the sun came out this afternoon? Anyone happen to know the wind direction when they were lighting up those fireworks at Fenway last night? It's only a couple of blocks away, and if embers are making it all the way to Kendall....just wondering.

The answer is, that can't have happened, since pyrotechnic displays use specific powder engineered to extinguish well before it would reach people.
For one to not extinguish, and then travel four blocks, and then lay in wait all night long, and then burn nearly 24 hours later ... send it to Mythbusters. See if they pick it up. Bet they'll just say that the Red Sox are in fact not responsible for people who move into a neighborhood and then decide to tell the neighborhood why they're wrong and should change.

Oh, and great job to Mike Mennonnonnnonno, photographing a bike theif, but doing nothing to stop him, or alert the victim to the theft. What an ass.
Where I'd Put My Money
Were I to place a bet, I'd wager my whole stake on "person walking through the area flung a ciggie in the reeds". Well, okay, maybe they were leaving Fenway Park? More likely that the usual cig fling was nearer to fire time.
Pyrotechnic embers are more likely to set neighboring roofs on fire, if they are still live for long.

If you see someone surreptitiously jump on a strangers bike: TACKLE THE MOTHERFUCKER. If you're too much of a puss to do that, at least scream some word of warning. Jeez.
I posted a comment on his blog
calling him an ass for sitting idly by while the theif made off with the bike. Let's see if he at least
has the guts to publish it. My beer money says he doesn't.
I agree. Why are there so
I agree. Why are there so few comments pointing that out. I mean if I see someone trying to steal a bike (and since he note it in the blog, it seems he was able to tell that he is stealing a bike rather than claiming his own), I would chase him down. WTF..

Welcome Spring
Even if we have had flooding and torrential rain, things like reeds are dry because they are hollow and completely dead - i.e. not absorbing any water. Kind of like hair.
