HOW MANY JUDGES RIDE THE RED LINE
By railfan

Untill the powerful people ride mass transit crime will continue to soar. The Governor should assign troopers to the trains to stop the madness.

Savin Hill T stop's problem is the Savin Hill part, not the T stop part.
Any violence is too much - however...

where's the evidence that crime on the T is "soaring"? The last couple years, the MBTA reported crime rates have been very low by historical standards. 2009's serious crime rate was the lowest since 1980.

Good Point Jeff. Yes MBTA has been in a steady decline since 1990.

yo bro, where do you live? it doesn't matter what station it is, dudes now-a-days anit afraid to back down especially with a gun tucked. This is Boston, inner city youths, no one knows where you're going to die it doesn't hurt to get my security. That victim that was killed was one of my closest friends, why don't you put yourself into his situation

Boston.com reports the police have "seized the house" at 49 Savin Hill Ave.
Every time I walk by that house, I lower my head focus solely on the sidewalk. There's always sketchy-looking teens in the doorway.
Not at all like the people in this Google Maps pic:

I lived in Savin Hill over the bridge for several years, that house at #49 has always been shady. The front doors are always wide open and no matter what time of day or night there's people hanging out on the steps. Not surprised at all when I heard that was the house cops went to.

I think every murder in Savin Hill in the last ten years is linked to that place.
Shows how one poorly managed Section 8 tenement can drag down a whole neighborhood.
It's probably the worst building east of Dorchester Ave.
Do you know it's Section 8?

We can debate pros and cons of Section 8, sure, but do we actually know that the tenants in this building are all Section 8? Say what you will, but Section 8 tends to have a lot of requirements about upkeep of the building, security, etc., usually asking landlords to do more than housing code requires, and they're pretty quick to kick landlords and tenants out of the program for not passing inspections.
The address isn't listed on any of the Section 8 lists I have access to, but that only means it hasn't been vacant in the past year or so -- I only have listings to share with community members, not access to their internal rosters. Maybe someone who works for one of the voucher programs can tell us if it's currently in the program?
And that's why I won't go near Section 8

I keep my buildings up. I have no trouble renting them out. If something breaks I want to know about quickly so I can fix it. I don't need the Feds telling me how to run my business.

I live a few blocks away from the JFK T, in what I consider to be a perfectly fine neighborhood. But there's this apartment on the corner of Crescent and Spring Garden that has always seemed equally shady to the one we're discussing...I've always wondered what goes on in that building...
...no actual incidents that I know of, though - and I've been in the neighborhood for almost 14 years.

It's not section 8, that house is owned by a moneybag in Weston who has a bunch of similar run-down properties on Dot ave and rents them out to ghetto thugs, most likely for cash. Goddamn slumlord just dragged down property values at least 15%, his contact info is below for anyone who feels like expressing their immense gratitude:

Did you look at the [url=http://www.mbta.com/uploadedfiles/About_the_T/Poli... cybah linked to earlier?
When you do, I think you'll notice that the year-to-year difference from 09-10 pretty much disappears within the 20 year trend. If there's another year or two with similar increases, then I could see there being legitimate concern about a trend reversal.
But right now, I don't think the datum bear out the chicken-little tone.

I read that the police followed leads back to a house on Savin Hill Ave that many neighbors were nervous about walking past. Clearly the turf of a scarey bunch of young people. Boston did NOT work for the young man killed. Boston is NOT working for his family. Boston is NOT working for Savin Hill.
Maybe that is why I saw heavily armed transit police at MGH..

Have there been any updates? Was that Derek lad just a random person who happened to be in the wrong place at a wrong time, or was he involved in some shady activities that put him in harm's way?
