Boston and State Police shut down Huntington Avenue and Mass. Ave. this morning as they searched for a man a caller said was dressed all in black, a mask on his face and packing a rifle, last seen entering a building on Mass. Ave.
Boston Police report officers quickly found the man and determined he was carrying a bicycle pump in a backpack. Police say the man, found with a ski mask, "has been sent for a mental evaluation."

Burlington Mall shut in search for man with a rifle that turned out to be an umbrella.

Sounds to me like the response was entirely appropriate to a report of a masked man with a gun entering a building.

A ski mask? In this heat? He does need his head examined.
what you don't know you shouldn't be so quick to judge.

Just for your information, it wasn't a mask it was a hooded sweatshirt and maybe you could put yourself in his shoes, he is homeless and wandering and not well. Have some compassion would you. Be careful of Karma dear one.
Actually it wasn't a hooded

Pool cue cases also oft mistaken for shotguns

+1 to anon. The response was indeed entirely appropriate. The reflexive anti-police rhetoric from some here is remarkable. FWIW, just about any bar that has a pool table will generate 911 calls from passersby that a man/woman "just went into the bar with a shotgun". Pool cue cases carried by serious players strongly resemble a shotgun or rifle case. Police would rather check it out than not. If you see something, say something.

You have to remember that every 10th thing Brett says is going to be the dumbest thing you hear all week.
If you see something, say something.

I am as cautious and concerned as the next guy, but I am tired of this constant "if you see something, say something" rhetoric. We've become a nation of nervous nellies, hysterical at every false alarm hurricane and false alarm "terrorist attack". People carry umbrellas. People carry pool cues. People put bags down on the floor and walk away like ditzes. Get over it. If I reported every odd person and thing I saw on the T there wouldn't be enough hours in the day. I recall when the entire city and T practically came to a complete standstill a few years ago because some clowns put up some electronic advertising for a now long forgotten TV show on the Cartoon Network, and one day somebody "saw something and said something". Those foolish things had already been up for at least a week (there was one up right near where I worked in the Fort Point area)before some alarmist said something and it suddenly became "big news". It was so obvious by their placement that they were an advertisement. Not to mention the cute little cartoon characters on them. Terrorists seldom use cute cartoon characters.
No Connection to Cartoon Network Situation

A guy was walking around with a ski mask and dressed in all black on an 80-odd degree day, carrying around a back pack and another unidentifiable device. The fact that the police overreacted to the cartoon network LEDs six years ago has nothing to do with whether they responded correctly to this situation. Furthermore, the fact they looked a little foolish once upon a time doesn't mean that they should be more lax when it comes to the next threat. Apples to apples.
I'm glad that the guy was not a terrorist and just an old fashioned nutcase, and we can all laugh about this. That doesn't mean the police were wrong to take precaution.

The people wielding said rifle-like items in pool halls are often crouched down, pulling back on the butt-end, and yelling things about shooting someone in the pocket. Call the police, say I!

Many need to stop and think a little before they react and jump to conclusions. Maybe if you would have bothered to speak to the man he would have been quite nice to you. Everyone always assumes everyone is evil, this society has run amuk with fear anymore, maybe one should believe in God a little bit instead of what they see or hear on TV or through our government, radio and newsbroadcast, etc.
