At least the cash registers still worked

Jacob Sconyers was in the Hyde Park Shaw's around 3:15 p.m. when the lights went out. He reports the cash registers were on some sort of backup, so the store could keep ringing up customers.
The power outage apparently wasn't confined to the store. Around 3:30 p.m., when firefighters lined the street outside the store parking lot, axes in hand, traffic in nearby Cleary Square quickly devolved into gridlock.

I had a similar experience at the South Bay Stop & Shop recently
Power went out, emergency lights went on, and they stopped letting new customers into the store, but I was able to keep shopping and then check out with a debit card.
Back ups
Most large commercial venues now have back-up gas generators tied into the natural gas lines. They will kick in with emergency power if the lights stay out more than 1-2 minutes. This gives them power for refrigeration and limited lighting and the cash registered. A few are diesel operated but may are gas.
One hopes the refrigerated
One hopes the refrigerated and freezer cases were also on some sort of backup power.
