Michigan mother and daughter get a quick lesson in street justice, Boston style

Sgt. Lucas Taxter from district D-4 is helping to keep the streets clear around Northeastern today. He reports:
After witnessing mother/daughter move-in's from MI untie & toss the No Parking sign the officer did the right thing.

What kind of lesson is that mother teaching her daughter? Usually the apple doesn't drop far from the tree. Hope this one moves back to MI when she's done getting edumacated.

Parents freak out
I am not excusing the mom's bad behavior, but based on my own experience, a lot of parents moving their kid in an unfamiliar place get so ridiculously stressed out (This place is unfamiliar! I don't know the rules! I have to get my precious baby somewhere safe! Why is my precious baby now an adult? We have so much stuff to unload and so little time! There's a mousetrap under the radiator, my baby's living in a DUMP!) that they freak out and do whatever they want.

I think the rules concerning taking down a no parking sign so you can park there probably apply in Michigan too.

I know what you mean--my father did a good job of the parental freak-out every. single. time. we moved into and out of THE DORM!!! By the time it came to thinking about getting my own apartment, I'd wised up and got some friends to help me with the move.
I think we're both breathing sighs of relief that those student-move times are over.

what happened, exactly? this mother took a no parking sign from the ground and parked there and threw the sign on street? just wasn't sure. also, this car could be a rental with MI tags. looks like rental type

What happened, exactly? The mother UNTIED THE TWINE and removed the sign from where it had been posted, and threw it on the ground. The cop who watched the whole thing happen picked the sign up and put it on her windshield, along with a ticket.

Well color me shocked but I thought those wholesome Midwesterners were just always so much more polite and considerate than us East Coast types! You mean to say there are selfish asses in flyover country? Who knew?

On Symphony Rd. I saw a cop telling someone as if they were deaf, "No you don't understand! You can't park here." Traffic in the area is horrible but the police are doing their best. But those of us in the neighborhood understand that you can't move your car at all today. What's up with all entitled parental units though? The kids are excited about it all and willing to work around the mob scene, but the parents are so put out. I guess they expected to head back to New York around 1PM, and when it's 4PM and they haven't unloaded yet they get kind of nuts.

It's one of those coming of age lessons - that college move will go a lot smoother with your folks in a museum, hotel room, or bar for the day.

How sure are you (or the cop) that the driver didn't just put her car there after returning the U-Haul she had been using?
(also, I'm surprised that any enforcement was happening on a legal holiday -- usually you can park anywhere, just as if it were a Sunday)

Signage is pretty clear. No Parking Tow Zone. So many violations, how could the city resist? move in day is great for city coffers.

the wrong attitude to have. Fines should be about enforcement only, not revenue enhancement.
You clearly aren't familiar
With move in day in Boston around the universities. The btd, inspectional services and bpd are all out in full effect to keep things moving smoothly. It has gotten a lot better over the past 20 years but it still sucks and i try to get out of town.

My daughter was counting rental moving trucks from our house in Watertown to a birthday party in Somerville. She saw 18. She told me we'd have to park somewhere else because there were too many moving trucks on that street -- then we found the free space at the corner.
Yes, move in day is the one
Yes, move in day is the one day of the year when the city actually enforces parking laws. Well, unless you are a contraction worker, then you still get to park in resident parking without a ticket, unlike everyone else who drives to their job.

You, sir, are incorrect. City of Boston NO PARKING signs are used for moving trucks. BPD NO PARKING signs mean... NO PARKING.
