The news doesn't mean we're getting the Olympics. It means Boston is being submitted to the IOC, which will make the final choice after carefully weighing all the options and determining the best place to highlight the youth of the world, and not letting money sway their votes in the least (OK, so Boston organizers have already said they're going to raise $50 million to convince the IOC, but that will all be money well spent on dioramas and mockups of trains that work, etc.).

When the Olympic Committee gets of the plane at Logan and can't get a taxi (because there are , like, 12 taxis in the entire city) - or better yet, if they have to suffer the shitstorm of an international flight landing at Logan (and THEN trying to get a non-existent taxi), or getting into a taxi with someone who can't find downtown Boston (and is eating a whole, deep-fried curried goat in the front seat while shouting into his phone the entire ride), that ought to change their minds!

The good thing about this
The good thing about this (for now) is it's only a bid--we would still be competing with other cities around the world ( http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2015/01/08/375690605/u-s-olympic-com...) so it's not for sure. That said, definitely hoping some other country wins and deals with this headache.

Some reasons
Quickly, off the top of my head at the moment; others please jump in:
The three weeks or so of the games will turn the city into a living hell for the people who actually live here and aren't attending events. Far worse than the 2004 DNC. And that's assuming we get those new Red and Orange Line trains on time and the T holds up a lot better than today (when brakes just randomly lock on trains and fill tunnels with smoke and the like).
But it's not just those three weeks: All the new facilities will be built at once - yeah, yeah, they're going to reuse college dorms and the like, but, they still have to build a stadium and the main Olympic Village.
Whole sections of the city will be turned into armed camps weeks, if not months beforehand. The UK installed surface-to-air missiles on the tops of apartment buildings.
People and businesses WILL be displaced. If I owned one of the warehouses in Widett Circle I'd be very concerned right now.
I don't really care what John Fish says about taxpayers not being left on the hook for this. If something goes wrong, they, ie., the rest of us, will be.
We Desperately Need Improvements And Expansion Of The Ⓣ
Not for the Olympics, but for the everyday needs of ordinary citizens. This foolishness is a major distraction that diverts resources and political energy away from things that are vastly more important.

Well, we've got 10 years and a deadline to improve the T. If this is what it takes to get the motivation to do it, I'm in favor. I'd rather have the T fixed and NOT host the Olympics, but ... let's just say that all I want for Xmas is a functional MBTA. And if it can only be had by bribing the IOC, fine, let's bribe the IOC.
10 years isn't enough time
for the T to do anything. Not long enough to order new subway trains, have them delivered, and then get the design errors fixed and installed. Perhaps some plans already on the shelf like the red-blue connector could get started. If lucky the GLX and Government Center rehab might get completed in time.
Housing
Housing. This is a big one. Not only hotel rooms for spectators, or athletes, but just about anyone who will be trying to rent a place to live around that time.
You won't be able to get a place. Landlords will "push" people out in hopes of cashing in to rent to spectators. Many spectators stay in the city weeks before and weeks after and make it a long "holiday" for folks. Lots of opportunities for people to re-rent

I think you're not understanding what this website is. This is not some kind of group-think of Adam supporters. There's a broad cross-section of the city that hang out here, and you get a lot of contrarian views here.

People who are not put out of their apartments, have three weeks vacation, and can afford the cost of attending the events (and can afford to forego renting their homes).
I kind of fall into that category, but not many people can even afford to turn down $$$ for their homes so they can go elsewhere. If they have the vacation time from work. If they are even getting paid while their businesses are shut down. If they aren't a tenant pushed out like Cybah was in Atlanta.
Consider how far the City and
Consider how far the City and State bent over backwards with Fourth of July on the esplenade - changing things like schedule to accommodate those who'll put it on a national platform of the stature which some of us so desperately crave - and some of the problems and embarrassment that came with it.

And the fact that this city and state have a notorious history of backroom deals and political corruption that don't benefit the common, everyday, hardworking taxpayer. It's just bad news all around.
Historical precedent
I recommend you investigate the local perspective of any recent winter or summer olympic host. I have relatives who live in Vancouver and London UK. They didn't have anything positive to say.
I also wouldn't exaclty say that Boston is a city who's economy is 100% tourism based.
I have friends who lived in
I have friends who lived in Vancouver at the time. They didn't particularly like the disruption, but they are absolutely in agreement that it was the only way they were going to get their new subway lines built and new buses purchased, and those things made it absolutely worth it for many who live there now.

Meanwhile, construction contractors who have been living off of instant ramen noodles since the Big Dig wrapped are putting their Lexus dealers on speed-dial.
NO PUBLIC INPUT
There was no public input to this bid at all! And some of their proposed Olympic hosting locations around the city are ridiculous. Say goodbye to the Common for the summer as that will be shut down for beach volleyball. Also say goodbye to Franklin Park as they plan to rip up the park for equestrian. And where the hell do they plan to build a new aquatics park and velodrome in the city? Plus explain to me why a temporary Olympics stadium should cost $700 million as it said in a Boston Globe article. At that price tag, it's not even any cheaper than any other regular stadium.

I am so tired of hearing all the cynical naysayers. Just because so many other cities have had terrible experiences does not mean it will be that way here. The Boston bid will probably NOT propose building massive useless stadiums and WILL rely on creative, sustainable ideas. If Rome, Paris, etc. insist on bankrupting themselves to get the Olympics, fine, let the IOC choose them. But if Boston can put forward a reasonable plan, I am excited about that. Bring it on!

There's no way to build an Olympic stadium without massive disruption somewhere and without ending up with a large, unneeded structure in the city, unless the Patriots are taking it over after, in which case people will still freak out.

The thing is, a certain core of people in Boston are convinced this can't be done, but heck, we can try. To be honest, we should be proud we came in first in the USA. You don't think that in Paris or Rome or any of the other bidding cities there aren't people worried about the impending shitstorm that will be somewhere in 2024.
To be fair to the naysayers, someone has to keep the powers that be honest. The way I see it, if Boston presents an affordable plan and loses, so be it. As long as the exact opposite doesn't happen, I'll be waiting for my handball and men's field hockey tickets.
Regional vs city residents
I think regional residents are excited because more of the cost burdens and impact will fall on Boston residents while they can hop on the train to come into the city and then return to their leafy suburbs.
Look at that parasite who get $200k/ yr to run the convention center (which needs another $1B FYI) - that is the kind of person who is behind this and will be benefitting from the Olympics.

That said, your point about the convention center head is 100% wrong, assuming you're talking about Jim Rooney, the head of the Convention Center Authority. He lives in Dorchester (in the not too fancy Polish Triangle), grew up in Southie and is Harvard educated. No, I'm not related to him or a friend of his, but one of my good friends has worked for him for years and he's been a very good boss to my friend over the years. If that's who you're referring to as an out of state parasite, you couldn't be more wrong.

Though let me put it to you this way. Let's say that they decided to put in a venue at Millennium Park, and one of the infrastructure improvements was extending the Orange Line out there. Would they have bought you off for that?
Honestly, I'm more impartial, let's hear them out, that I will end up on this board. I love a good argument, and it's been way too one sided. I'm not saying the masses support this, but still, some people were surprised that Bush got re-elected in 2004, and others were surprised that Obama got re-elected in 2012, mainly since they didn't know anyone who voted for him (respectively.)
And if it is the Commonwealth that is picking up the tab rather than the City, I would say that the region as a whole has a bigger dog in this fight. Three week's disruption is nothing. The 30 year mortgage for it is another thing altogether.

I have fond memories of almost seeing (and falling asleep in) "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" in a drive-in near the exit to Route 3 in Kingston Massachusetts (in like 1980 or something?), with my father and brother on one of those foggy nights that looked like a cloud had descended over town. Yeah, it was a stupendously bad idea, but somebody fronted the cash for the darned things.

The Mayor and his people need to put together a concise road map as to how all the small businesses, vendors, food trucks and LOCALS will be able to capitalize and benefit from this. Too often when there is an opportunity to make money in this city the deep pockets and the friends of the Mayor get to swoop in and take the good spots, kick out everyone who was already there and SCREW the little guy.
If this actually happens, and it probably won't, we all need to make sure we are able to walk away with a huge bucket of cash whether it is by renting our homes out, selling licensed Olympic merchandise, keeping our bars/restaurants open late, vending near the busiest spots or just being left alone.
A coalition should be formed now so once the screwing begins we are prepared to fight back.
If ALL the citizens don't stand to benefit in some way from this then we don't need it. We don't want it and it should go away.

I work in tourism
I work in tourism. So you might think I'd naturally be in support of the Olympics coming here.
Wrong.
When the Democratic National Convention came here is 2004, it was one of my worst years ever. The normal tourists stayed away from the city in droves, for weeks before and weeks after the convention. They heard all about the security issues, the booked-up hotels, and everything else, and just decided not to come to Boston that year. And I got absolutely no business out of the convention delegates. They stayed in fancy hotels, ate catered meals sponsored by lobbyists, and never saw the normal city.
The Olympics would be a thousand times worse.
The construction companies, hotels, caterers, and charter bus companies would benefit. No one else would.
The Marathon is only one day and we're all used to it by now. Sports championships, likewise one day for a parade. Tall Ships never seemed to create a hassle, in my opinion, and lots of local residents went to see them as well.
But weeklong (or longer) mega-events like the DNC and Olympics, no, a thousand times no.

Traffic
Just got in after spending 2 hrs stuck in traffic for an unknown reason, (weather, Gov) and then got the news about the Olympics, ain't thrill, let me tell ya!
I hear you on this on, The Fox 915.
Having Boston host the 2024 Olympics would simply add...big time, to the already-nightmarish situation that Boston traffic poses, if one gets the drift.
Cash cow for construction
Unintended alliteration aside, I believe that the reference to John - suck out every dollar Mr. Average Citizen owns - Fish is a major component of the reason. He and his construction colleagues will need new projects as the Seaport District building boom finishes.
Considering that construction companies have been sucking cash from government and private sponsored building projects like a tick that can't stop beginning with the Big Dig, it makes sense that Fish et al. are desperately looking for new projects. Construction companies are addicted to a continuous stream of project. The Olympics will be the cream of their dream. New stadia (one will not be enough), an nuclear power plant wattage paranoia security zone, aka Olympic Village, that arises from the flattened part of the forested area of Franklin Park is perfect.
All the folks who wanted to create a highway of a scar through JP? Now's the opportunity; just in a different form. Hell, why keep the Arboretum? That's another fabulous area where the parasites of progress can level and build.
This is about money. Not about prestige, honor or any other hifalutin sounding words. Pure greed.

Why don't they just hold them in a permanent venue in the Mt. Olympus region of Greece. Greece, if anyone, would love more foreign investment. And then one would be re-using the same facilities over and over every couple of years [plus year round for various other competitions].

For the Winter Olympics, it would be Switzerland - lots of mountains, probably at least some real snow and lots of top notch transportation. There would be a training and travel fund for

Prepare to have your rights violated.
One quibble: Yes, the city and state set up a "free speech zone" in a cage outside the Garden during the DNC. But it really wasn't enforced. Sure, the Westboro people had a stage there, and a guy dressed like one of the aliens from the "To Serve Man" episode of "The Twilight Zone" held court there, but nobody was forced in there and there were protesters well outside the cage. But that's more of a historical quibble than anything else - as they will tell us roughly 67 gazillion times - 4/13 changed everything.
Increase Gas Tax NOW
With the plummeting gasoline and diesel fuel prices, NOW is the ideal time for the state Legislature to do a little work and pass a fixed increase in the gas tax! Consumers will least feel it and complain right now.
...provided its used to INCREASE traffic capacity instead of reducing it like recent projects have been doing. Stop turning 4 lane roads and bridges into 2 and 3 lanes! Stop removing overpasses and make more, including pedestrian/bicycle ones. Restore slip turn lanes! Fix some unsafe bridges while at it. Take Chapter 90 money away from Cambridge because they only reduce transportation with it.

I really hope that Boston does not get selected for the 2024 Olympics. For all kinds of reasons, it would be a totally disaster. The city of Boston, on the whole, is too small, and too congested and too densely populated to handle something like the Olympics coming to town. Not only would it affect Boston residents, but residents living in surrounding areas like Cambridge and Somerville, for example, would be affected, too, in an adverse way.

The Olympics don't just fly into Logan the night before and cheerily doff their hats with a jaunty "Cheerio!" as they dash off to the Olympic Village. For one thing, there are all those surface to air missiles that have to be installed, weeks before.

Don't dare post a negative opinion about the Olympics to the Boston reddit or you'll get called an idiot by a bunch of college students from the suburbs that inhabit it. I'm really curious why they are gung ho for the Olympics. Most of them will be recent grads by then and will have gone home to New York and New Jersey so they won't be even around for it.
