Seems our second president would have preferred July 2 as Independence Day, although that would have deprived us of that story about him and Jefferson both dying within hours of each other on the national holiday.

I'm no historian, but I sometimes wonder if that conclusion is incorrect. He wrote the letter about this before the Declaration, a document far easier on the eyes than the Lee Resolution, had been finished. Is there any historical evidence that Adams was against celebrating the event on the 4th?

not against celebrating independence on the 4th at all. He did it every year starting in 1777. On July 3 he thought the 2d would be the date because that was when the resolution for independence was passed. Pretty good--he got everything else right.
I think the celebration was more important than the date.
