City Council approves Latin Quarter designation for Hyde and Jackson squares in Jamaica Plain
By adamg on Wed, 04/27/2016 - 12:40pm
The City Council voted unanimously today to approve a measure celebrating the Latino heritage of Centre Street from Hyde to Jackson squares in JP.
The designation of the stretch of Centre Street does not change the name of either square, but could make the area eligible for state funds, City Councilor Matt O'Malley (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury), who sponsored the proposal, said.

Not that it will change much
The steady march of gentrification will continue.
Neighborhoods change.
Whatever your feelings about gentrification, no neighborhood stays the same forever. Fifty years ago you still might have called it the Irish quarter or even the German quarter. With rare exceptions, designating a neighborhood the domain of one particular ethnic group is like nailing jello to a wall.

That stretch of centre is
That stretch of centre is going to be so white in less than 10 years this will be pointless.
Yes but
All the kids will be going to Latin
Never!
Romanus eunt domus!
What's this then?
People called Romanus they go the house?
Good one!
I have some reservations about this kind of thing--Bill Forry expressed it well in a Dotnews.com editorial. Despite our notions about Boston's ethnic enclaves, our neighborhoods are more diverse than we think, and of course they change all the time, sometimes because of gentrification, sometimes just because. Hyde Square used to be full of Cubans, now not so much. How many North Enders are still Italian? It just seems to set a weird precedent.
Ed.
Still doesn't know who rolled him , not buying it in " South " Dorchester .
And
What's wrong with that?
just in time
for all the Latinos to be priced out!
Here we go again
Another day, another opportunity for the city council to engage in a useless debate. Time used for the trivial is time not spent solving real world problems.
It's known as "cheap politics"
Same rationale as when the Legislature passes laws designating otherwise nondescript pieces of infrastructure as the "So and So Memorial Curb Cut" to honor a person that nobody's ever heard of and who was doing nothing uniquely heroic or outstanding when they were killed.
Individually, such acts may seem like a small blip on the radar. Add them up however, and you'll find they represent a considerable waste of time and other resources.
Uhhhhh Eastie anyone?
If anywhere in Boston is the Latin Quarter it's Eastie
I heard
they're going to rename that the English Quarter
They'll rename it that
When the Central Americans all move north.
