The City Council voted unanimously today to approve a measure celebrating the Latino heritage of Centre Street from Hyde to Jackson squares in JP.
The designation of the stretch of Centre Street does not change the name of either square, but could make the area eligible for state funds, City Councilor Matt O'Malley (Jamaica Plain, West Roxbury), who sponsored the proposal, said.

Neighborhoods change.

Whatever your feelings about gentrification, no neighborhood stays the same forever. Fifty years ago you still might have called it the Irish quarter or even the German quarter. With rare exceptions, designating a neighborhood the domain of one particular ethnic group is like nailing jello to a wall.

I have some reservations about this kind of thing--Bill Forry expressed it well in a Dotnews.com editorial. Despite our notions about Boston's ethnic enclaves, our neighborhoods are more diverse than we think, and of course they change all the time, sometimes because of gentrification, sometimes just because. Hyde Square used to be full of Cubans, now not so much. How many North Enders are still Italian? It just seems to set a weird precedent.

Another day, another opportunity for the city council to engage in a useless debate. Time used for the trivial is time not spent solving real world problems.

Same rationale as when the Legislature passes laws designating otherwise nondescript pieces of infrastructure as the "So and So Memorial Curb Cut" to honor a person that nobody's ever heard of and who was doing nothing uniquely heroic or outstanding when they were killed.
Individually, such acts may seem like a small blip on the radar. Add them up however, and you'll find they represent a considerable waste of time and other resources.
