Drivers might want to avoid Forest Hills this weekend; 38 and 39 bus riders will board in a different place

MassDOT reports crews will shut the intersection of South and New Washington streets in Forest Hills this weekend for work related to the Casey Overpass replacement project.

The intersection will be shut at 10 p.m. on Friday and re-open at 5 a.m. on Monday, MassDOT says.

During these operations, South Street between the Arborway and the Monument will be local access only and pedestrians should cross New Washington Street at the intersection with Washington Street. Access from the Lower Busway to South Street will be maintained at all times.

The MBTA bus routes 38 and 39 will operate from the lower busway at Forest Hills Station during these impacts. Both routes will be detoured via McBride Street and Williams Street between Washington Street and South Street. The following bus stops will also not be served: South Street at Spalding Street, South Street at Saint Rose Street, and South Street at Child Street.

It is going to be Carmageddon all over again.

If the State could have kept to a schedule all this would be over by now. Imagine how long it would have taken them to build a new bridge instead?

Just as long, and it would remain a neighborhood slicing, car-centric POS infrastructure built for the convenience of suburbanites and passers through.

The job is almost done. Most of washington south is in the new alignment, all the shea circle stuff is done, and what's there is way nicer and makes improvements for people who actually take public transportation. The new northern headhouse alone makes the work all worth it.

I don't appreciate walking across 8 lanes of traffic, rather than the few surface lanes that used to be there.

When the Route 38 was extended from The Monument to Green Street Station (the original station) buses looped via McBride. Around 1961 the loop was modified to include Forest Hills Station. For a time you even had the Route 48 (created in 1973 as Route 595) running nearby on Elm and Sedgwick. The routing serving this section of JP was eliminated for good as part of the infamous 1981 service cuts.

Now turning Route 39 artics from South onto McBride... That'll be a sight to see...

Looks like they've changed the detouring since Adam's original post. 38 and 39 buses will continue to operate from Upper busway, but will exit left to Ukraine Way and head off up Hyde Park Ave/Washington Street to who knows where. South Street will be closed to all but local traffic, and no bus stops between the Monument and the Arborway will be served for the duration of this work. Many of the suggested detours wander off around the Arboretum via South/Bussey/Walter/Centre (clockwise) or Centre/Walter/Bussey/South (counterclockwise). I expect this to be quite a mess for much of the weekend. And I certainly don't envy the guy that wrote the memo explaining suggested routes.

But gaining permanent alignment through the South/Arborway intersection North/South (and more lanes to/from Rozzie) should be a big improvement in the North/South flow. Once the central, currently Station-side, portion of the Arborway gets on its permanent alignment flow will be better still. Here's the text of the email:

Does anyone know if cars will be able to turn right off the Arborway just past the Arboretum to get onto Washington Street?

It does seem that this route will be available. See the detouring map here:

I read your directions last night and got lost in my head. The map clarifies a lot.

Thanks.
