CommonWealth Magazine reports on a call by Bill Galvin, Secretary of State and Man about Brighton, to the mayor of Lawrence, who's backing Josh Zakim's bid to unseat him. It did not go well.
More Candidates are needed for Office of Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to improve the Elections Division and improve FOI Freedom Of Information Open Government !
What happened to the Brian Felder Campaign?... for the Office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
It's not more candidates that are needed
It's voters who are willing to pay attention.
Maybe the government can educate them
Zakim, a 33-year-old councilor from a famous Boston family, has said he was running to offer a fresh perspective on how the Secretary of State’s office can be used as a tool to expand civic participation by increasing opportunities for people to become registered and vote.
So a red-diaper grandbaby and a hackorama elite are going to go at it. This could get more interesting than Sanders/Clinton. Whoever wins gets to play with the voting machines*.
*Probably the most profound sentiment ever written on UHub. Sometimes I amaze even myself.
This is write Uhub needs to support a write-in candidacy for theszak. If the Brookline Turkeys got behind him, how could he possibly lose short of a bagel or bicycle related scandal?
A red diaper baby is a child of parents who were members of the United States Communist Party (CPUSA) or were close to the party or sympathetic to its aims.
I was going for "sympathetic to its aims".
I love Russians. I hate communism. I would not wing out 'Russkie lover' as an insult. Hate the game, not the player, homes.
Everyone ought to know by now that if a Jewish person has a (D) or (S) or (G) after their name, they're off limits. Whereas if they have an (R) or an (L)...or for that matter if they just *don't* have a (D), (S), or (G) after their name, then they're fair game.
For example:
Josh Zakim...off limits.
Debbie Wasserman-Schultz...off limits.
Ben Shapiro...feed him to the wolves.
Me...well maybe I'm posting this from inside the stomach of a rather fearsome lion.
It's even possible to see this in a semi-controlled experiment. When he was a Democrat, Joe Lieberman was off limits. Then he got primaried, dropped the (D) after his name, won anyway, but became persona non grata. Doubly so when he endorsed McCain. David Horowitz was another good example from back in the day.
Actually, come to think of it, being Jewish doesn't seem to have anything to do with this phenomenon. Imagine that.
The Massachusetts Democrat party discriminates against jewish persons. They have add ons for delegates of the state convention and add ons for membership of the state committee. These add ons are minority persons, youth under 35 (but not elderly), disabled, and LGBT.
They define minority as black, hispanic, asian, native american, and cape verdean, but they do not include jewish persons as a minority and dont allow them to be add ons while allowing other minorities to be add ons.. Many of the people they define as minorities are in fact in the majority. Jewish persons clearly are a minority but the Massachusetts Democrat party discriminates against them by not allowing them to be among the minorities they allow to be add ons though they have a category of minority for add ons and allow other minorities to be add ons..

Anything manufactured in China (not Taiwan) results in taxes paid to the Chinese government which is Communist. If you buy anything which was manufactured in part or whole in Communist China then your antipathy toward Communism is not very strong.
But an ad hominem attack of a person is cheap and frankly stupid. The kind of stupidity that shows off the worst part of Americans. A foolishness and stupidity that led to electing a man who lusts for greed and flesh and whose mental illness causes him abuse and destroy everything he touches.
Have you ever known a community activist (aka a marxist leghumper) be careful with money?

Lenny Zakim Fund raising money for social justice. Josh the community activist.

That ole Carl just made for himself on the inside knowledge of Trump and his steel tariffs. Notice Carl likes all the money he made from selling steel stock before Trump made his idiotic announcement?
Steel stocks went UP after Trump announced possible tariffs. If you sold before, not sure if you made or lost, but you probably left lots of money on the table.
point for me. Manufacturers that rely on cheap Chinese steel will now look to either cut wages of employees or raise product prices. Steel will be fine. Its the negative economic snowball that tariffs and increased steel costs will have. Overall and as karma has it, its going to crush agriculture and southern states that house auto manufacturing. Trump country can bend over and grab their collective ankles.
Glen Beck survival gardens or Rush Limbaugh gold coins most real Americans are invested directly or indirectly in stocks and bonds through their retirement plans. Carl, an adviser to the Russian Puppet, dumped a million shares in Manitowoc, a heavy equipment manufacturer that relies on cheap steel. Coincidentally just before Cheese Balls announced his steel tariff proposal.
Law abiding investors must work on a level playing field populated with public information. A person using insider information to buy or sell securities is a common thief. More importantly they affect the holdings of those investing by the rules. Its redistributing a shareholders equity to a chistledick cheater.
I know none of this matters to you because you see this discussion as defending your side. The Russian side, the insider trading side, the military deferment side, the multiple marriage side, the grab em by the pussy side etc.
Galvin has held the office for 23 YEARS. So on the one hand, it's way past time for "bold leadership and new ideas", to quote from Josh Zakim's campaign site. On the other hand, I need to see more specific proposals for reforming our criminally inept public records access system, beyond digitizing "as many records as possible".
Zakim is a semi-useless ball of fluff propped up with out of state money. If Josh's family name wasn't on a landmark he'd never have been elected in the first place.
It's unfortunate they can't both lose. As of yet there is not a GOP candidate. Not saying such a candidate would automatically be better, just that it would be good to have more options.
Ever met Zakim? I have and I had a lengthy conversation with him where I expressed a little concern over a former lawyer with a big Boston firm that will be in charge of the lobbyists in this state and to his credit, he answered honestly. He has topical ideas that are needed in this state.
Zakim is just a good kid playing a lot of angles, he deserves Galvin's job. Galvin is just another old school Boston scumbag who has had it way too easy for way too long and now he's cared shitless that his taxpayer funded useless ass is on his way out due to a younger smarter upstart.
Make no mistake, Zakim is a player and knows the game, however, I believe he's a sincere young man who wants to make a difference state wide.
In the phone call, Galvin claimed to have gotten Rivera elected by keeping Mass elections honest. Rivera replied something like, "isn't that your job?"
His department regulates small and medium sized investment advisers (securities fraud is a part of that if they misbehave). Larger advisers are regulated by the SEC.
Forgot about that, but his office is where you file appeals when a local police department or board of selectmen denies your request for public records.
Can't say I'm a Galvin fan or know much about anything the state secretary does, but being a Boston residente I do know that Zakim never seeks endorsements from unions and doesn't seem to want anything to do with them. I'm not sure how you win a statewide election in MA without union support. I mean, it's been done before I'm sure, but for state secretary, with low voter interest, it's going to be incredibly hard without union support.
His district is not exactly overrun with people in the building trades, lower level government worker, or most any other profession that is unionized. I mean, it would have been nice to seek out their support, but not necessary.
I don't have much of an opinion on *who* would replace him, but he's been hanging out in that position doing jacksquat to facilitate open government, secured elections, and voter engagement as far as I can tell.
(My only reservation is that he might be replaced by some tech-hungry fad-monger who wants electronic voting.)
... to all the bosses, spouses, shop stewards, ward heelers, etc. whose job it is to ensure that the people in their charge vote correctly. You bring everyone in to a meting, have them fill their their ballots together, and then ensure that they are all correct before sending them in. Otherwise you pretty much need to take people's word for how they voted.
Compared to the messes that elections have become in many other states, I appreciate Galvin's early insistence that all towns and cities use paper ballots. He has never been involved in voter suppression efforts. But he also hasn't been much of a leader in trying to expand voter participation.

Do you think this money was not properly distributed?
Easy, Ron!! Think of who you're dealing with here!
I bet you don't spend as much time in the cesspool that is right wing radio so I would not expect you to know that a red diaper baby is.
It's a term made popular by a well known scumbag, racist and fraud named Michael Wiener, aka Michael "Savage".
Weiner is another former flower child who washed away the good vibes of the 60's and 70's by cashing in on the racism and homophobia of today's right.
"Savage" likes to call people who disagree with his old racist ass "Red doper diaper babies"
Idiots that use that term are usually big listeners of that moron and are more than likely morons themselves.
Welcome to the spectrum
First and foremost, that would depend upon your stance on the full social equality of all members of society.
What spectrum would that be?
The one where everyone speaks in ridiculous coded words to thinly veil their hate crime speech because they would be thrown off the site for saying KILL THE INFERIOR (insert minority or gender group here)?

In a very small capacity, not really directly, for a short time. Not a lot of interaction but all positive. Saw him interacting with many others too.
Found him to be a very sincere, polite and humble young man.
Friendly and low key demeanor but definitely sharp.
I was living in the city st the time and wished he represented me.

Not the same
That isn't the same. I'm talking something more like Oregon has had for a couple of decades now.
Vote by Mail is a godsend...
... to all the bosses, spouses, shop stewards, ward heelers, etc. whose job it is to ensure that the people in their charge vote correctly. You bring everyone in to a meting, have them fill their their ballots together, and then ensure that they are all correct before sending them in. They want their paranoia back.
Vote by Mail would remove all the electioneering that goes on at polling places. That's why people like you raise the Scary Union Ghost Card.
Nope
Doesn't happen. Hasn't happened in corporate areas or churches, either. But thanks for fearmongering.
Or the people that collect
Or the people that collect all the unclaimed ballots dumped off at multi-unit buildings and fill them out "correctly" prior to mailing them in.
Mail in ballots are a vote fraudster's dream.
Prove it
Where in Oregon has this occurred in 20 years of mail in?
Do tell.
Vote by mail also works for door-to-door ballot buyers
with wads of $5 bills.
???
Door to door ballot buyers?
Your imagination is truly grand - sure you shouldn't be ginning up the paranoia at the NRA?
You think those guys have anything on fundie churches?
Lol. They'd be turned in very quickly for what you describe.
It isn't the 1960s.
Other states have had vote by mail for a generation now. Hasn't happened. Doesn't happen.
