Progressives split vote, so longest serving state rep gets to serve even longer

Scaccia

Angelo Scaccia, who has served in the state House of Representatives since 1973 - except for two years - won re-election tonight in the 14th Suffolk district, which covers Hyde Park and parts of Roslindale and West Roxbury.

Latest results from the Boston elections department show Scaccia with only about 39.5 percent. But with Gretchen Van Ness and Segun Idowu splitting the progressive vote in the district, that was more than enough to retain his seat.

Van Ness is coming in second with about 26% of the vote and Idowu third with about 21.5%.

Two other candidates combined for almost 4%.

The vote for Idowu and Van Ness adds up to enough to unseat this ancient DINO, but the left can't get itself organized behind a single challenger. Now we're stuck with this fake Democrat, who is against LGBTQ rights, against women's rights, and against the separation of church and state. Again.

At least this time he just carried out his electioneering illegally close to the polling place door, rather than physically blocking voters from entering without listening to his pitch first, which he usually does.

"real Democrats" don't get organized. that's how it usually works in politics - the conservative party stays organized. the liberal party stays fragmented.

It is claimed that ranked preference voting would fix this. Maine is trying it. I'm watching eagerly.

Gretchen stood 10' from the door and blocked people's path at the Bates School in Roslindale for over an hour.

I was there from 7am-8pm. Those of us supporting various candidates started out trying really hard to follow the letter of the law: 150ft from the door. We were all the way back to the driveway to to the school lot and the end of the fence on the other side.

Eventually the Murphy and Scaccia people came in and stood right the walkway to the door. When I mentioned we were trying to have a nice agreement to play fair, I was immediately asked "where are you from, 'cause I was born here."

Over the course of the day people slipped closer and closer, because no one from the elections department enforces the law.

That said, Idowu impressed me. Also, I hope you did the math and noticed that 25 plus 21 is still less than 50. Then again, 43 plus 46 is still only 89, which means your totals are off by 3.

But don't ask me if they total up to anything near 100%.

And Van Ness voters and Idowu voters were not necessarily from the same wing.

Annnnnnnd this is why we need ranked choice voting! One candidate should not have to bow out so the other has a chance to unseat the incumbent. They should all be able to run how they without worry of splitting the vote. This is not another Paul LePage but the idea remains the same.

Well played Angelo! Van Ness (well known at the State House) ran and split the progressive vote. I'm wondering if there's a judgeship in her future? Anybody else sickened by this crap?

I really thought we'd get rid of him this round. He's just too out of touch.

"He won the popular vote!"

He has been a rep since 1973. I was born in 1973. It should not be a life-long post. It was the first time I could vote against him and I will again.

Any word on how Galvin did against Zakim last night?

Or just to be obnoxious?

If the former, let me know and I can tell you, and I'll apologize for thinking somebody who follows local politics closely enough to remember details of the 1994 election in the 5th Suffolk state rep's race wouldn't already know the answer.

Featuring a sitting Boston City Councillior against an incumbent, a Bostonian whose name has graced your pages in the past. You had write-ups about the race while it was going on, and then nothing.

I suppose the more obnoxious question would have been about the exciting Register of Deeds race, but mentioning both would have been over the top.

I did mention the race in the post about Pressley.

I posted the results in response to Waquoit, not realizing that you already had them posted. Sorry 'bout that, Adam...feel free to remove post if warranted.
