Boston landmark now officially a landmark

Now White Fuel was a true Boston Icon -- if not an official Landmark
Hopefully the sign still exits in someones warehouse -- that would be a fabulous one to resurrect

There are still several steps between the vote of the Commission and it becoming an officially designated Landmark
I suspect that there can be considerable wheelin & a dealin in the steps outlined above

Too bad the buildings around the sign
which have far more historical significance than a commercial advertising sign, which isn't even the ORIGINAL sign installed in the 1960s, are apparently ineligible for the same landmark status.
This is NOT what historical preservation is supposed to be about people.
What does "landmark" status mean?
I like the Citgo sign but is this just a "certificate of award" or some type of legal protection of the sign? The article isn't very clear on what "landmark" means.
Boston City Landmark status
Once it becomes official -- see tedpk's comment above -- Boston City Landmark status for a structure means that its owner is required to get approval from the Boston Landmarks Commission before making any changes to the structure that would be visible from any public way, street, avenue, park, etc., within the city limits. That would include, of course, demolition as well as lesser alterations, I believe even including paint color. Except in very special cases, landmark status does not apply to the interior, only to exterior elements that are visible from the street or another public space. (An exterior alteration that's visible only from a neighbor's back yard would not be included.)

I think Rep. Joe Kennedy II (the father, not the current kid in Congress) and the second wife were making nearly a million dollars each at the "non-profit." That money would have heated a lot of homes. Meanwhile, Venezuleans are forced to eat zoo animals for meat.
This was after he almost blew up one of his kids in an attempt at an illegal fireworks display down the Cape not to mention the woman who was paralyzed when he rolled over the SUV.
The oil must have "dried up" after Hugo Chavez died because the dutiful media would annually have Kennedy on TV driving a local oil truck pulling the hose and feeding the "needy" homes every year around this time. I haven't seen that in the past few years.
