Asian-American doctor at Mass. General recounts man running across street to scream at her about coronavirus

Forbes interviews Dr. Lucy Li, an anesthesia resident at Mass. General, about what happened one night earlier this pandemic after she left work and a man ran across the street and began screaming epithets at her and and blaming her for coronavirus - and continuing to follow her until she finally ducked into a store that happened to be open.

Not surprised unfortunately. Thankfully, she was able to get somewhere safe. Asians need to be aware of their surroundings now more than ever.

I'm not surprised, either.

I worked down in that area for a bit. There are a lot, and I mean a lot of street people. They have problems and are being 'taken care of' by the social service agencies or local government. I can imagine the stress they're under, getting their news from CNN, or no news at all. I don't know which is worse.
That has got to alter the otherwise reasonable behavior that they are generally known for.
'Asians need to be aware of their surroundings now more than ever.' In that area? Why just Asians?
Why not everyone?

But we do know which is worse. Just check out the Fairleigh Dickinson study. Spoiler: It's Fox News.

Call It Out, Every Single Time

People won’t change their behavior if they do not believe there is a problem that exists or a real reason to change. Many people, like those who defended the use of the terms “Chinese virus” or “China virus,” did not realize the nation was facing problems with racism or were in denial of its existence.

what happens when the electoral college, installed supposedly to prevent demagogues, elects a depraved demagogue who spews racist vitriol for 3 1/2 years, heeds no warnings about doing so, continues to do so after evidence of the racism spreads father, wider, and becomes terroristic, and then said orange fool ultimately calls a virus the "china virus."

This is virus is hard shit, playing by the hard rules of reality, and that doctor is one of the people committed to decreasing human suffering. Unfortunately the virus is going to kill a lot of good people on both sides. Fortunately it is going to kill a lot of bad ones too. No, I'm not the arbiter of who is good or bad--it's all left up to the pure chance of the whims of President Orange Talking Anus.

that objections to calling covid-19 the Chinese virus or Wuhan virus are just bullshit political correctness. That only inflames the xenophobia that has always been one of Trump's favorite loathsome political tools, as evidenced by hate crimes like this that are happening all over the country.

The man who inherited and fumbled the position of leader of the free world spends more time looking for scapegoats than addressing the actual crisis: he doesn't take any responsibility at all, and if he can racistly Other his lethal failures, so much the better. His cult eats that shit up.

And to people who say what about Ebola and MERS: WHO decided in 2015 to stop naming naming diseases for their (supposed) origin, since it doesn't serve any purpose, and causes major problems for the people from the named area.

At best he's indifferent to human life apart from his own. He sees furthering a cold war with China as a way to enrich or empower himself and his immediate family. If Americans die or are hurt in the process, it's irrelevant so long as he remains king. It's a sentiment his supporters share.

he outed himself as a grandfather in another post, it's perfectly fine to dismiss everything he says with "OK, boomer." Also a perfect candidate for someone to be labeled as having Trump Derangement Syndrome considering the lengths he'll go to defend Trump and/or blame others, but especially Democrats/the left.

Spending his time trolling an internet forum is a pretty sad use of the guy's golden years.

' It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury
Signifying nothing.'

'that objections to calling covid-19 the Chinese virus or Wuhan virus are just bullshit political correctness. That only inflames the xenophobia that has always been one of Trump's favorite loathsome political tools, as evidenced by hate crimes like this that are happening all over the country.'

Please, show us examples. Oh, lemme see, links from the Forbes article...schoolyard fight February 14th. Racism. In Los Angeles. Shocking. From CBS News, America's most trusted news source. The company that substituted an Italian ER for a New York one. Twice. The New York Times...'Yuanyuan Zhu spit at in San Francisco' OK, in the city with the highest population of street people in the country? I blame President Trump.

'The man who inherited and fumbled the position of leader of the free world spends more time looking for scapegoats than addressing the actual crisis: he doesn't take any responsibility at all, and if he can racistly Other his lethal failures, so much the better. His cult eats that shit up.'

Or not. It's your opinion, but like they say about opinions...anyway, maybe the racists are everywhere. Certainly we cannot discount the official Communist Chinese government press reports, like this one:

IMAGE(https://i.imgur.com/oWM8uaF.png)

'The Spanish flu wasn't from Spain, assholes,...'

Here, read about the Spanish Flu. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pandemic-resources/1918-co... Worldwide, nobody really knows where it started. 500 million infected, fifty million dead. It was called the Spanish Flu because, basically, they were the only country that was not blocking info on it, to the extent that other countries were censoring information.

'..., and though we might have done, we didn't call the swine flu the Outsourced American Pig-Processing-Plant flu, either.'

Swine flu? Here, learn something... https://www.cdc.gov/flu/swineflu/index.htm
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swine_influenza
There's a good reason for that, "Swine influenza virus is common throughout pig populations worldwide. " Please note that one of the Smithfield plants (a Chinese owned company) that was closed shipped its product (pork) to China.

Since you brought up the subject of naming nomenclature, take a gander (that's an avian flu pun) at this:
Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
MERS
Norovirus
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (wow, a region and a species)
German Measles
Spanish Flu
Lassa Fever
Ebola
Zika
Marburg Virus Disease
Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever
Lyme Disease
Guinea Worm
West Nile Virus
Bourbon Virus (insert 'do not want' dog jpg here)

Naming a disease for the region of origin was normal until the CCP decided to try to shed/deflect blame for their transgressions with the help of a compliant and Trump hating media.

No one is denying the virus originated in China. But that fact is irrelevant. By December 2019 there was widespread reporting of SARS like virus ransacking a region. Did the Trump administration prepare? No.

By January it was spreading as reported by almost every news outlet in the world. It was no secret. Did the Trump administration prepare at that point? No.

By February it was in Europe and spreading quick. Did the Trump administration prepare or even acknowledge it could be a pandemic? No.

By late February and Early March did the Trump administration even start to acknowledge it was real. By that point, it was too late. American could have avoided the worst had he listened to the Government's own experts in early January. But he shit all over the experts and said he knew best.

So don't try to pin this on China. The fact Trump wasted months and months when everyone who read a newspaper knew was happening is entirely on him. He had every opportunity to be ready and he blew it. Now he's trying to scapegoat by claiming it's China's or WHOs fault. And you are doing the same if you suggest China or any other organization is responsible for the mess we're in.

Other countries which prepared (South Korea) are doing fine, all things considered. So yes, the worst was avoidable. This could have cost the US a billion in preparation and not Trillions in half assed recovery efforts.

Not true. At all. One of the later smears, from ABC was shot down. Col. R. Shane Day, the director of the NCMI, a component of the Defense Intelligence Agency, refuted the ABC News report in a statement.
"As a matter of practice the National Center for Medical Intelligence does not comment publicly on specific intelligence matters," he said. "However, in the interest of transparency during this current public health crisis, we can confirm that media reporting about the existence/release of a National Center for Medical Intelligence Coronavirus-related product/assessment in November of 2019 is not correct. No such NCMI product exists."

The CCP was lying like dogs. They did everything they could to cover it up.

"By January it was spreading as reported by almost every news outlet in the world. It was no secret. Did the Trump administration prepare at that point? No.

Bullshit. By the end of January, when the President banned flights from China, he was excoriated as a racist by just about everyone left of center, meaning pretty much the whole damn media. Not that some were interested...

IMAGE(http://i.imgur.com/W8yOuuo.jpg)

By February it was in Europe and spreading quick. Did the Trump administration prepare or even acknowledge it could be a pandemic? No.
Again, wrong. By the time he realized that, because of racism reasons, the EU was not doing a damn thing about air traffic from China, he was forced to shut down air from the EU. By then, the 'asymptomatics' had a good solid toe-hold in Europe and getting one here.

By late February and Early March did the Trump administration even start to acknowledge it was real. By that point, it was too late. American could have avoided the worst had he listened to the Government's own experts in early January. But he shit all over the experts and said he knew best.

Again, simply not true. Do you remember the stories of Nancy Pelosi, Marty Walsh, Bill deBlasio all going to their respective Chinatowns and hanging with their Asian peeps to show solidarity against Orange Man Bad's racism in blocking CCP flights? Please, do I have to do all the legwork here? You don't have to go far. Hell, you can look up plenty of the stories right here on Uhub. Oh, BTW, Nancy deleted hers. Trump, however, has been having a ball tweeting a copy of it.
"So don't try to pin this on China. The fact Trump wasted months and months when everyone who read a newspaper knew was happening is entirely on him. Can't be WHO's fault...or can it? Remember this little gem?

You want prepared? Look up the stats on Taiwan. They saw it, don't trust Jinping as far as they can throw him, figured out what was up and it worked out well for them.
We should recognize Taiwan's sovereignity.
No, can't pin this one on the President. He's doing what he can in the face of an openly hateful House.

WHY did he cross out the name “Corona” with his sharpie and write in “Chinese?” There must have been a reason.

I’m curious to see how you’ll spin it into anything other than his pathetic attempt to stir up xenophobia and shift blame away from his own ineptitude.

...we're not in Lansing.

All week, theyve had red hat zombies literally clawing at the doors of the Michigan Capitol and blocking entrances to hospitals.

HOSPITALS!!!?!?!?!

Waving Old Glory, Trümp flags, and Confederate flags with guns on them. Wearing MAGA hats and screaming obscenities all while threatening violence.

I've brought this up before but WE. ARE. AT. WAR.

And it's with ourselves.

Things are going to get far, far worse and it's time we all figure out who our allies are.

A new Union of like-minded states that share ideals and goals.

It's time to cut the red states loose, let them pray the gay away and we keep our money right here at home.

Germs spreads, vermin spreads, hate spreads. Yesterday a judge released a neo-Nazi who attempted to blow up a Jewish Center for assisted living in Longmeadow. Judges are releasing career criminals who resumes include rape, robbery and domestic violence. Even Rachael Rollins to her credit has opposed the release of dangerous criminals back on to the streets of Boston.

What is the point of posting this? Why is the doctor investing any time into acknowledging this kind of behavior? She could have called police to report as that seems disorderly... The person clearly has mental issues if this story is fully accurate. I know everyone hates Trump and it’s all his fault but I just don’t see what good this story does to anyone. I know you don’t like whites people (esp men) but you need to learn to be more open minded. Learn to be more comfortable in your own skin.

Many, many studies about how "just ignoring it" does not work, never worked, and never will work.

That is why the training for school workers starts off saying so - and then moves on to accountability.

But you just whine that bullies are being held accountable now. Too bad. Get used to it. Just because you got away with vile shit in school doesn't give you a right to harass people now.

Throughout the world, dictators are using the coronavirus to stir up hatred. This is happening in Russia and China, where the hatred is directed against the US, and the would-be dictator in the White House is trying to make it happen here. This is a tried-and-tested strategy; stir up hatred for an imaginary enemy to distract from the incompetence and corruption of the leadership.

Everybody in the world who is powerful enough to have made appropriate preparation for this pandemic, or to have responded to it quickly and effectively, is at fault for any failure to do so. When those at fault accuse others, it is not out of any desire to see justice done, but out of a desire to retain power, or increase it. When an entire country is blamed, it really gives the game away. This is not careful allocation of responsibility; it is a call to raw, nationalist hatred, and those who make the call, like Trump, are responsible for the acts of hatred that ensue.

They busted whistleblowers, like the late Dr. Li Wenliang, who were trying to warn them about this new virus. Though they exonerated him, There are some reports of journalists and doctors "disappearing" even as late as April, because things aren't as cleared up in Wuhan as they say.

But how hard is it to distinguish between the government and the people? This woman was already taking a big risk working at a hospital as is. He didn't just shout at her (no problem) but followed her (potential threat). Many hospital workers and health researchers are Asian. We need them!

Before Trump wiped out the program, anyway.

The Central government was never trustworthy. Other presidents - Democrat and GOP - knew that. That's why there was surveilance in China by CDC staff.

Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama never thought the Chinese would either be able or willing to deal with inevitable pandemic outbreaks.

That's why they had a CDC program in China.

Guess who gutted that program? I'll give you one hint ... its the same toddler whiner who fired the pandemic response team.

For what it's worth, I caught grief from some joker on a bike in Allston while moving some stuff on a hand truck a couple of weeks ago. Something along the lines of going back to China after infecting everyone. It was annoying. In case it matters, I was born in the US of Asian descent.

More practically, some of the early focus on the novel coronavirus being "Chinese" and limiting testing to people who had visited China recently, might have blinded the US to cases coming from Europe, allowing the virus spread undetected for weeks.
