"Child was in his backyard" -- that was not in the original story on which I was commenting
"dog charged in" -- Also not in the original story
"Multiple calls to Animal Control" -- Yep. Also not in the original story.
"like shown in the video." -- There was no video.
As I said at the time I posted, "we don't have many facts yet"
What she wrote did dovetail with what I saw at 11 on the news. That said, if Bob hadn't seen that, he would not know. Bob commented based on the information presented at the time, and as Tricia did not provide any context to her comments, I kind of am with Bob on this.
Of course, everything is under investigation, so I suppose the facts are less clear until the investigation concludes.
mostly likely a poorly trained dog, in an uncontrolled situation, with bad owners.
every single type of domestic animal can have a bad day. it is incumbent on owners to put their pets in safe, secure setting, and to give it enough training so it knows how to respond to unfamiliar or scary situations.
The problem is the media only reports if it is a pitbull. One important statistic not reported is that only 11.2% of dogs that bite have ever been given any obedience training. In 53% of dog bite fatalities, there was some suggestion that the dog was provoked by being struck, poked in the eye, having things thrown at it etc. We have always pulled our dogs tails since they were puppies because a child might do this. We never did it to hurt the dog, but rather trained it to move away when it happens.
Insurance companies keep lists have various names depending on the company, such as "excluded dog breeds," "aggressive dog list," "insurance list of dangerous dogs," "prohibited dog breeds," and one simply labels it their "bad dog list" of dogs they will not insure:
Pit Bull/Staffordshire Terriers
Rottweiler
Husky
Malamute
Akita
German Shepherd
Wolf Dogs
Chow Chows
Doberman Pinchers
Great Danes
Presa Canarios
When was the last time you heard the media label a husky as an "aggressive dog"?
How the dog is treated is also important. Dogs that are chained, or kept confined in a small yard, are approximately 3 times more likely to fatally bite people.

When do dogs make moral decisions? Can't be bad otherwise. A dog can only be itself; it is not capable of lying, deceiving and manipulating as humans are.
What breed? Who knows. Lord knows there are enough enough dogs in the area that are not always friendly to stranger (thinking about certain German Shepherds in the Saving Hill area.
But "bad" dogs are great for stupid headlines. If it bleeds it leads.
So, you're accusing the 11yr. old child of being a bad child and taunting the dog and thus the 11yr. old deserved to be mauled? Check your privilege, Lee.
dog viciously attacking 11 year old child off duty police officer intervened and saved child, currently in surgery. two pit bulls removed by animal control
(info via @BienickWCVB )
What were the actual breeds of the dogs? Can't be pit bull, there is no such breed as pit bull. That is a categorical name for American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bulldog and Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
Another article with more information stated the off-duty officer heard a child screaming and climbed over multiple fences to come across the dog on top of the child with another dog attempting to get to the boy. Certainly saved the boy's life.
