Citizen complaint of the day: Beacon Hill isn't Southie

A concerned nob filed a 311 complaint yesterday about this simply ghastly space saver at Spruce Street and Spruce Court on Beacon Hill:

Oh really? You want to go there? That's it. Adam please pick me. All you space savers, nasty note writers cowardly left at 3 am, and idiots who think they pay real estate tax and have a deed of record to a space that they shoveled to get their car out on a public street, are wrong and have no law saying that's your space. Leave your car there til the snow melts, walk to the bus or train to get to your destination (which will wake you up, open your eyes, and be grateful). Selfish shits. Say hi to your neighbor and be kind.

This has been going on in the city of Boston far too long! Back in the eighties my Mom had a young woman come to the door at dinner time proclaiming we were parked in her space. We ignored her and when my Mother went out the following day all 4 of her tires were slashed. The same exact thing happened to me in East Boston. I used to work at Wonderland and came home late one night up by the high school. I shocked to find a spot however someone before me had thrown the chair that was to there into the middle of the small park. I had all 4 of my tires slashed by a neighbor identified to me by other neighbors. This hole space saving BS should be stopped once and for all by the Mayor. If somebody wants to keep a spot endlessly after a snowstorm then as others have said. Leave your car parked until Spring!

They are wrong about possession of a public parking space but what is "nasty" about it?

You basically never see a space saver in BH
The reason that BH didn't bother lobbying the city to get officially declared a no-space-saver zone as the South End did, is that we've pretty much been spared the entire space saver drama: almost nobody ever tries to save spaces here. Hence people getting cranky when someone new to the neighborhood does try it.
Yeah, above a certain density
Yeah, above a certain density, the idea of saving a street space becomes even more ridiculous. You'd never see one in Manhattan, for example -- it would get tossed within 5 minutes.
If you can afford Beacon Hill
If you can afford Beacon Hill, you can afford to avail yourselves of the many garages in the vicinity.
It's slightly more complicated than that
There's a lot more Section 8 housing than you might think.
It's very hard to get a space in most of the garages -- the garages are either condo selling for $500K per space plus the monthly vig, or years-long waiting list for the small number of rental spaces available to the public, since MGH has been gobbling up all the available rental spaces.
Not that complicated
I lived on the hill for around 20 years. So I can attest to the fact that space savers simply weren’t used.
But you don’t need a 500K parking spot either. If I “needed” my car, I would simply park at Alewife or Wellington for a couple days and keep the snow off that way.
So basically, I support the “this isn’t Southie” sentiment.

I worked in Beacon Hill for years, basically half those cars don't move until spring.
Funny - BH mostly has the reverse problem.
My street in Beacon Hill has 7 spaces that were empty during the snow storm. Pretty rare that on a normal day for there to be more than 1 or 2 empty spaces. I haven't been up in a while, but at least one of them has a 4 foot tall pile. I am guessing they are still not usable.
And per another post, I'be seen at least one "you took my space note" on my street. And as per above I didn't even wandered very far to find it.
Saturday afternoons have
Saturday afternoons have always been the easiest time to find parking on Beacon Hill. That's when people get in their cars and drive out and about.
On this particular Saturday,
On this particular Saturday, people probably weren't out having fun and running errands. They probably stashed their cars in a garage to avoid having to dig them out.
They must be blind
There are space savers all over the Hill.

Don't want to shovel? Don't own a car in a city where it snows or pay for garage parking.
