They've clipped my wings again
Tore them apart and then
Left me
No use to fly away to
My yesterday
Of freedom
My eyes died back that day
Seeing the hurt I may have done
Beat me instead of them
Pain is my only zen
Of fun

The tattoo's message brings back memories of Catholic school when at a surprisingly early age we were thought about martyrs, mortification of the flesh and the possible virtues of self-flagellation. It surely worked in getting our attention. If I remember it correctly, the practice helps offset some sins but I can't tell for sure if it works as I've never tried it myself.
Maybe this woman took a similar class? If the (Amazon Prime-shipped) shoe fits...

Or a mother with an abusive partner. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem like ink that someone in a safe situation would have. :^(

Zero beating is the right quantity of beating. I hope she gets the help she needs, and that they do as well.

Unfortunately I think this is probably about domestic violence, and shielding children from it.

I can’t believe that I’m the person that knows this, but the phrase is a line from the song “Lemon”, by Katy Rose, which was used in the movie Thirteen:

I don’t know what the line signified in the song, and even less what it signified to the person who chose to have it tattooed across her shoulders, or even that she got it from the song or the movie at all. It’s just another detail in the story.
