Coyote lassoed on Beacon Hill
By adamg on Wed, 03/27/2024 - 9:20am
The Boston Sun captures the moment when a Boston animal-control officer captured a coyote on Anderson Street for relocation to someplace a bit less urban; reports the sight of the beast startled even grizzled Beacon Hill residents who had grown used to other forms of wildlife, such as turkeys and owls.

I hope Beacon Hill gets
I hope Beacon Hill gets bombarded with rats more than ever before. Did they find its den?
Why?
Why do you wish that on Beacon Hill? Do you somehow think that the neighborhood, rather than ciry animal control, made the decision to get rid of the coyote?
Why
Why relocate the coyote, and not simply destroy it?
Because
The coyote hasn't done anything wrong just by existing or finding its way to Beacon Hill. There are plenty of relatively wild places for it to live out its life so moving it there is more humane than destroying it.
Crunch all you want
They'll make more.
Lots more.
Removing coyotes from an area results in increased numbers of pups until the space is refilled. https://www.humanesociety.org/resources/what-do-about-coyotes
Not really
The phenomenon you cite only applies to animal populations living in habitats that inherently support their existence. Relocating a coyote that found its way to a place that doesn’t have enough food and shelter to support a coyote population, doesn’t open up space for more coyote pups.
Rats
There is a substantial rat population in Beacon Hill. Maybe not a balanced diet, but it could support a family of coyotes.
As long as the rats had not been poisoned.
There are rat poison boxes all over Beacon Hill.
The Common and the Public Garden have plenty of available rats. Squirrels too.
Hey now!
That seems rather harsh!
Why argue with the anon
and not simply destroy it?
I believe...
I believe this coyote is a relative of the Volunteer Yacht Club coyote in Lynn.
Brahmins do love their aquatic activities. They're probably cousins.
Someone should really reprimand that cheeky constable. /s
