Cleary Square losing its rap aura

The Boston Licensing Board decides tomorrow whether to let somebody buy ODB Liquors, 1253 Hyde Park Ave. in Hyde Park, and change its name to the more prosaic Hyde Park Liquors.

The new owner, Surya Narayan Corp., is not planning to change anything about the store except its name, attorney John Mooradian told the board.

Nobody spoke against the proposal at a hearing today.

At one point, Compton Drug was on the corner, and next to it was another outlet of ODB Liquors. Gangster rap central.

Long Live the ODB Liquors chain!

But, wasn't there a gun store above the Hyde Park Ave location at some point? I guess after this the only ODB Liquors left will be Mission Hill.

I think it was A&B Guns or something.

Isn’t it awesome, living in a free market economy, in which all you need to do if you want to change the name of your business is to… (check notes)… hire attorneys, take time off from running said business, and appear before a government body to beg their permission.

I'm not sure you need attorneys to change the name of a business @Bob Leponge. But you do have to file a form with the Secretary of State and wait for it to be approved though. The Boston Licensing Board is involved because the business in question sells liquor.

I used to shop there when I lived nearby. The staff claimed that the name stood for "One Determined Business".

Sure. Whatever you say.
